Issue218 In order for any work of art-whether film, literature, sculpture, or a song-to have merit, it must be understandable to most people.
Art has been around human for centuries. It is one of the greatest treasures created and possessed by human and human only. Besides bringing pleasure and inspiring thought, it also arouses controversy:where does the merit of art lie? In my opinion, art is valuable so long as it demonstrates the ideas of artists, whether most people are interested or not is not so
much concerned.
To begin with, I believe that the merit of works of art has little to do with the public's understanding of them. According to what Freud has said(and I paraphrase), art is in essence the release of human lust and the translation from human libido into plentiful creativity. Art is designed to express the artist's desires, passions and emotions. Take Vogh Gough's paintings for example, during his lifetime, nobody could understand his works, but nobody can deny his works are great today. Simply put, as long as the work contains the artist's feelings
and emotions in it, it has got unique merit, let alone what the public feels about it.
Furthermore, art doesn't have to be understood by most people. For one thing, there is no need for the public to totally understand the work of artists. After all, most of us are not possessed with the vast knowledge needed to interpret the art works, besides, since they bring with us relaxation and pleasure, why bother to understand them, just leave the tough job to critics. For another, the vague meaning conveyed in art is where its charm lie. After reading <<Hamlet>>, each reader forms a unique Hamlet in his mind, what if everybody feels the same about the character, in that case, maybe Shakespeare's works would not be that appealing. What is amazing about art is that it provides us with great space for imagination, to create our work based on the original one.
As a matter of fact, art will lose its value if it caters for the public's interest blindly. Nowadays there are those who creates art of low grades to attract the public in order to make money. There are a number of network singers who made their fortune overnight. It is true that they have succeeded now with the public's support, however, their works which have little merit would soon be forgotten, along with their names. Only the refined art can sustain through the test of time, for instance, Davinci's <<Mona Lisa's smile>> attracted people for centuries since it was created, and its charm is bound to reach to the future. True arts have great vitality while art designed only for entertaining the public would soon die away.
To sum up, we can easily conclude that art is valuable because it expresses the artists’ emotions and feelings, and therefore it doesn't matter whetherit is not understandable to most people, nor is creating arts for public interests highly evaluated.

1.艺术作品的价值与人们理解与否没多大关系,关键在于它能否表达作者的情感
2.艺术作品没必要得到大多数人的认同
3.如果艺术作品一味迎合大众口味才会失去价值 |
