TOPIC: ARGUMENT142 - The article entitled 'Eating Iron' in last month's issue of Eating for Health reported that a recent study found a correlation between high levels of iron in the diet and an increased risk of heart disease. Further, it is well established that there is a link between large amounts of red meat in the diet and heart disease, and red meat is high in iron. On the basis of the study and the well-established link between red meat and heart disease, we can conclude that the correlation between high iron levels and heart disease, then, is most probably a function of the correlation between red meat and heart disease.

The conclusion of the argument that the correlation between high iron levels and heart disease is most probably a function of the correlation between red meat and heart disease seems logical by giving the evidence that an article entitled 'Eating Iron' reported that a study found a correlation between high levels of iron in the diet and an increased risk of heart disease, and some other analyses. However the conclusion of the argument relies on a series of unsubstantiated assumptions.

First, there is a false analogy between the iron which is mentioned in the article and that in red meat, lacking an assumption that the two kinds of iron are the same, the iron in red meat is not a seasonable model to the iron in article. First the amount of iron which is mentioned in article and in red meat is both uncertain, perhaps the amount of iron which is in red meat is smaller than one mentioned in the article, and that lead to a less use of iron to course a heat disease when one eats red meat. Second, there are a series of kinds of iron in chemistry and the author fails to present each kind both in article and in red meat, perhaps they are different. All in all, the two ‘iron’ which are mentioned in the argument are entirely impossible to be compared with.

Second, red meat does little indicate that an increased risk of heart disease. Some evidence is needed to support the iron in red meat do a course-and-effect relationship with an increased risk of heart disease. Perhaps, the iron which is contained in red meat can not be absorbed by people who eat red meat, and the heart disease is affected by some other reasons such as the way red cooked or other diet contains with iron. In addition, the affection of red meat do on heart disease is not clearly showed out. Perhaps, the more red meat a person eats, the less risk of heart disease will be. So the author can not make the assumption that red meat will increase the risk of heart disease.

At least but not the last, even if all the analyses above is logical, the conclusion that the correlation between high iron level and heart disease is most probably a function of the correlation between red meat and heart disease is not the most reasonable one that can do an explanation of the affection that iron does a heart disease. It is entirely possible that some other meaningful suggestion that will do better explain on how the correlation between iron to heart disease. For example, the iron in water the people drink everyday, it will be also a probably function to increase the risk of heart disease. So we the conclusion is uncertain without more information about the diet of people in daily time.

In sum, the argument is based on some unbelievable assumption that can not well support the conclusion as it stands. To strengthen the conclusion the author should show more information about the function of iron in doing the affection of heart disease. The author should present more evidence that the red meat make an increased risk of heart disease.
