TOPIC: ISSUE26 - "Most people would agree that buildings represent a valuable record of any society's past, but controversy arises when old buildings stand on ground that modern planners feel could be better used for modern purposes. In such situations, modern development should be given precedence over the preservation of historic buildings so that contemporary needs can be served."

The controversy over whether old buildings should give way to modern ones has long existed. But no one is able to give a perfect answer. The old buildings are the valuable record of our past, but the question is, which building is important enough for us to let it stay, and which is not? To what extent should we preserve these old houses? In my opinion, we should try our best to preserve the most valuable ones, while tear down others to make way for the new things to come.
It is clear to everyone that the development of a culture needs plenty of spaces. If the city is filled with old houses and streets, the modern buildings will have no place to settle down. They will either turn to countryside and take up the field where crop was grown, or they will not come into being. Compared with green fields which makes possible of our living, the old houses of the past is relatively less important. That is to say, we do not need to preserve every house, from those of the Renaissance up to the those of 20th century. After all, the society is developing all the time. If we were to preserve every detail of the past, then our city will one day have nothing but the past. Luckily, we have alternative measures to preserve the past cultures, like museums, libraries, photographs, videos etc., all of which could serve as valuable records of past culture. Thus, certain old buildings in the city should make way for the modern buildings, which represent the modern culture and which provides us with much more convenience.
To speak of modern buildings, they are not, as most people think, perfect to our needs. Modern planners are always planning for this or that, but the quality of their plan is not always satisfying. In china, for example, many old buildings are torn down to be replaced by buildings of poor design and much less quality. These new buildings are then torn down to make room for others. The continuous construction is not only a waste of time and money, but, most importantly, hampers the development. After a tiring stuggle, Chinese city planners still found themselves at the far end of the modern trend.
An architechture of renown once make a comment of Chinese city planning like this: At a glance, there are full of copies and immitations of westernculture, which is a tragedy of Chinese culture. In fact, China mistook new things for the best things. Modern culture is not just buildings of the latest design, but of deep and precise evaluation and proper identification of its own culture and its past.
As a conclusion, we cannot easily decide on whether to let modern buldings replace the old ones. Before resorting to the bombs and trucks, we should make careful consideration about the historic value of the old building and the feature of the new. |
