TOPIC: ARGUMENT155 - The following appeared in a letter to the editor of a local newspaper.
"Too much emphasis is placed on the development of reading skills in elementary school. Many students who are discouraged by
the lonely activity of reading turn away from schoolwork merely because they are poor readers. But books recorded on
audiocassette tape provide an important alternative for students at this crucial stage in their education, one the school
board should not reject merely because of the expense involved. After all, many studies attest to the value of allowing
students to hear books read aloud; there is even evidence that students whose parents read to them are even more likely to
become able readers. Thus, hearing books on tape can only make students more eager to read and to learn. Therefore, the
school board should encourage schools to buy books on tape and to use them in elementary education."

The author put forward a suggestion that school board should buy books on tapes in elementary education since hearing
books on tape can make students more eager to read and to learn. To justify this suggestion, the author cites facts as
follows:1),students who are discouraged by the isolative reading would turn aways from schoolwork because of their poor
reading skills.2)many studies confirm the value of allowing students to hear books read aloud,3)evidence show that students
whose parents read to them are even more likely to become able readers. However, the argument suffers from serious logic
flaws which render it convincing.
To begin with, the author unfairly assumes that poor readers generally turn away from schoolwork. It is possible that
those students excelle in other subjects such as mathematics and music and therefore they turn away from schoolwork that only
deals with reading. If it is the case, the author can not make a sweeping generalization that those who turn away from
schoolwork are merely poor readers.
Secondly, the author does not provide sufficient evidence to make "many studies" credible. even if those studies are
believable, the author still has to specify what kind of values those studies have confirmed. It is entirely possible that
the values only embodies in the situtation where the students can hear books read by others or themselves, and passively
listening to the audiocassette could not help improve their reading skills at all. If it is this scenario, the fact that many
studies attest to the value of allowing students to hear books read aloud  lends little support to the author's suggestion.
Thirdly, the author unreasonable equals hearing books from parents to hearing books on tape. Common sense informs me
that hearing books from parents may have some interactive exchange between the parents and the students. Yet hearing books on
tape may lack this kind of interaction. Without accounting for this difference, the author can not make an analogy between
the hearing books from parents and hearing books on tapes.
Finally, even if hearing on tapes would faciliate students' reading skills, the author does not offer any evidence to
show  this kind of action would make students more eager to read and to learn. On the contrary, it is possible that students
would feel reading a boring thing since they can not have interaction simply by listening to the tapes. If it is the case,
the author can not draw a conclusion that hearing books on tape can make students more eager to read and to learn.
In conclusion, the argument is groundless as it stands. to strengthen this argument, the author has to substantiate that
fact that it is the poor reading skills that make some students turn away from school work. The author still has to prove the
credibility of the studies that prove the fact that students would improve their reading skills by listening to audiocassett.
Thirdly, the author also has to make a comparison to show there is no difference between the hearing books from parents and
hearing books on tape.Last, the author has to offer evidence that hearing books on tape would intrigue students to read and
learn.
