TOPIC: ARGUMENT56 - Collectors prize the ancient life-size clay statues of human figures made on Kali Island but have long wondered how the Kalinese artists were able to depict bodies with such realistic precision. Since archeologists have recently discovered molds of human heads and hands on Kali, we can now conclude that the ancient Kalinese artists used molds of actual bodies, not sculpting tools and techniques, to create these statues. This discovery explains why Kalinese miniature statues were abstract and entirely different in style: molds could only be used for life-size sculptures. It also explains why few ancient Kalinese sculpting tools have been found. In light of this development, collectors should expect the life-size sculptures to decrease in value and the miniatures to increase in value.

The argument is, for the first glance, logical and reasonable. However, further analysis reveals that it contains a few flaws and deficiencies. According to a recent archeological discovery of molds of human heads and hands on Kali, the arguer maintains that the ancient Kalinese artists used actual bodies as their molds, not sculpting tools and techniques, to create statues. Furthermore, the arguer points out that the discovery right explains why few ancient Kalinese sculpting tools have been found. Accordingly, the arguer advocates that collectors are supposed to expect the life--size sculptures to decrease in value and the miniatures to increase in value.

Nevertheless, I find it less cogent to claim that artists of ancient Kali used actual human bodied as their molds with such scant and unsubstantial evidence. Because the archeological discovery of molds of human heads and hands doesn't necessarily indicate that all ancient Kalinese, or the most of, artists used human bodies as molds when creating statues. It is entirely possible that only quite of few artists of ancient Kali used the actual bodies as their molds, the most used sculpting tools and techniques. And also, chances are that the sculpting tools and techniques used by ancient Kalinese artists were not easy to be preserved, and therefore most were decayed as time passed by and of course, few were discovered by archeologists. Consequently, it is unjustifiable to maintain that ancient Kalinese artists used actual bodies as the molds to create life--size clay statues.

In addition, it is also reluctant for the arguer to believe that the discovery explains why kalinese miniature statues were abstracted and entirely different in style by taking merely one reasons into account: molds could only be used for life-size sculptures. Because no solid and justifiable clues that may be able to substantiate that molds could only be used for life--size sculptures. Even if the ancient Kalinese artists used only actual human bodies as their molds, it is highly possible that not only can these molds used to crease life--size statues, but also miniatures. Besides, we may find other explanation for the abstractness and difference in style of Kalinese miniature statues. For instance, it is because of the brilliance of artists that these miniature sculptures were abstract and different in styles.

Ultimately, even if the ancient Kalinese artists used actual human bodies as molds and these molds could only be used for life-size sculptures, it is not so reasonable and rational to predict the trends of the value of sculptures. Maybe due to few amount of the life-size sculptures, the value of them won’t decrease as is predicted by the arguer, but on the contrary, it is highly possible that the value of life-size sculptures are going to accrue. Additionally, the latter part of the prediction that the miniatures are to increase in value is also of little credit. As the arguer only points out that the molds could only be used for life-size sculptures, it is entirely possible that the amount of miniatures are not small, for artists of ancient Kali were able to sculpt miniatures without molds, or the molds and tools used for miniatures haven’t been discovered by archeologists yet.

Overall, the arguer well presents his or her reasons and evidence to reinforce the argument and the prediction that the value of life-size sculptures will decrease, while the miniatures’ is going to increase. Nonetheless, before being convinced by the arguer, collectors should evaluate more evidence that would make the implication that the prices of sculptures will convert in light of the development be more cogent.
