"Humanity has made little real progress over the past century or so. Technological innovations have taken place, but the overall condition of humanity is no better. War, violence, and poverty are still with us. Technology cannot change the condition of humanity."
人类在过去的100年左右止步不前。技术在不断进步而人类的整体条件却没有改善，战争、暴力和贫困仍然困扰着我们。技术无法改变人类的处境。

The author asserts that although technology have improved greatly in the past century, human being's living standard have not been improved. It is tempting to believe such an assertion considering war, poverty and violence are still with us. After careful thinking, I hold the opinion that technology have changed our life greatly even if there still exist some problems which need us to solve.

To begin with, there is no doubt that technology have taken great and outstanding changes and human being's daily life have changed a lot during the last century. Technology not only provides convenience to us but also make our life more colorful. Let us think the 1960s, there is no computer at that time, the process of dealing with data are a complex and heavy burden on human being's brain; the process of transmit information are not convenient at all; human being's daily life are not colorful at all. After the invention of the first computer, human being have benefit a lot from this new machine. And nowadays, the computer has upgraded for several generations. Its size is becoming smaller and smaller, its appearance is becoming more dexterous, its ability for solving problem is becoming stronger and stronger. It can deal with many heavy and complex manual work , so human being are liberated from works and possess more leisure time to relax themselves and do more meaningful things.

Admittedly, there do exist some problems such as war, poverty and violence which human being have not solved although the great improvement of technology. One important thing we should not overlook is it such kind of problems is not the result of technology advancement and that the solving of the problem need human being's collective efforts, technology itself is weak to deal with them. War, poverty and violence have been with since the beginning of human being. It is human being's nature to fight for resources when there is not enough resources, one extreme form of fight is war and violence; since the resources for human being is limited and mankind have not find the suitable ways to distribute the resources especially the basics goods such as food, there do exist poverty or hunger in some regions. Therefore the solving of such kind of problems need all governments in the world to gather together and discuss the suitable ways to solve them collectively. Fortunately, some developed countries have taken some measures to support some developed countries, for example, Bill Gates Granting give thousands of dollars to developed countries. And another important thing we should not overlook is that technology really play an importan role in the solving of such kind of problems. One case in point is that in China Longping Yuan, the father of cross-breeding, have cultured a modified rice seed which increased the products of rice outstandingly, he has made great contribution to the solving of poverty. In short, the soling of problems such as war need all countries' effort, technology lonely is not enough to solve them even if technology plays an important role.

To conclusion, human being have made great improvement with the advancement of modern technology in the past century. The solving of problems of war, violence and poverty need all countries' efforts, the role technology played in the solving of such kind of problems should not be overlooked.
