issue11 [OB小组]第13次作业_pesticide_全球大学
I concede that the development of a global university is significant in modern society, however, on account of the purpose of university and the actual situation of all nations, it is unwise to advocate the development of a global university which committed to engage students in the process of solving the world's most persistent social problems.
First of all, a global university is a good way to enhance the academic and culture communication among various nations. Culture is a symbol of a country to some extent, and represents the spiritual vitality of a nation. Figuratively, if we considered various countries as various individuals, culture should be regarded as languages used to communicate among them. We can understand a certain country by learning its culture, because common values held by the people in the country embedded in culture. Only through culture manifested by a country, can we know the prevalent value, norms, customs, morals, and so forth of that country, thus we really understand a country in-depth. People can get to know other country's culture in different ways and culture communication through universities is a preferable way, because compared with the folk communication, the college students who had received superior education in intellect and moral, would have held wide vision and open to accept the novel and different things. Therefore, they would not be narrow-minded and would evaluate different culture impartially and acknowledge the value of different countries, and develop friendly atmosphere during communication, thereby promoting the mutual understanding among different countries. Also, academic communication between global universities lead to the help of developed countries to the developing countries, it will create a harmonious international relationship.
The significance of global universities in enhancing the academic and culture communication is undeniable, however, in reality, it is unnecessary and unpractical for all nations to initial a global university committed to engage students in the process of solving the world's most persistent social problems. For one thing, considering the poor economic situation of some backward countries, it is unwise for them to invest their scant money to build a global university while neglecting the urgent problem faced. In the second place, the purpose of university for most students is the general education, which is committed to promote the overall development of students, mentally and physically. Premature specialization do harm to the overall development of students, and complex and intractable social problem should leave to some specialists who had received both general and special education to deal with.
To address the world's most persistent social problems without building a global university, there are other way to solve them. Countries in the world can build a constant and reliable dialogue mechanism which devoted to address the problems. G8 summit and North-South dialogue is a good model. Through open dialogue and discussion, some thorny issues are solved in turn. Hence, through the international cooperation among governments, some troubling problems can be solved without a global university involved.
Overall, I acknowledge the important role played by the global universities, nevertheless I do not think that initiating a global university which engage students in the process of solving the world's most persistent social problems is necessary. |
