TOPIC: ISSUE38 - "In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."

The speaker claims that reading book is no longer important as it is used to be. I concede that people are now spending more time on television, and it certainly has it advantages that book can not compaire. However, reading book , as a traditional learning method, can never be replaced by televisions.

To begin with, as the development of technology, television and other mass media have played an unreplaceable role in people's daily life. TV makes our life more facility, especially to those who do not have much time for reading. Most of us get used to turn on the TV when we get up in the morning and listen to the lastest news through the TV while busy preparing to go out. Comparied with the newspaper we used to depend on, the TV do not take us much time while telling us the most important news. Someone may claims that TV programs are less selective than the books and newspapers, however, more and more TV programs are being created everyday and people may have more choices in the future. Also, learning through the TV can be more interesting. As the TV express things through image and sound, learning through TV will be more lively. Some of the subjects such as languages and scientific experients can not lack the help of TV. Also, compared with reading books, watching TV can relax us more when we need some rest without using our head. Thus, in today's world, TV is an element which can not by replaced.

Although the TV has many advantages, reading book is still an important way of learning. While reading a book, one can concentrate his mind in the content, and the book never disturbs our comtemplation. While we watching TV, our head can never keep quiet and we have to follow the TV's arrangement passively and can not choose the knowledge we want to learn. In this way, we are just an passive recipient. When we reading a book, we decide the pace, the content and the time. If we do not understant something, we can read it over and over again, and turn to other books for an explaination. In this way, we are play a positive role in learning and obviously this kind of learning can give us more.

In addition, the knowledge is more thoroughly and some of the records can only be written in words. An example is the thought of a human. Although some literature such as novels can be turned into films, these films can never experess the pith of these novels. Also, the poems which give people a lot of imagitives, if it is expressed by the TV programs, people can never learn the interesting of reading a poem. Moreover, reading books have some extral happiness. We can read a book while enjoy the sunshine with some friends quietly outside the door. However, we can never enjoy such happiness when watching TV indoor. Thus, reading books give us more than learning.

To sum up, although the TV are playing a more and more important role in learning, reading books will never be forget by us. Not only do we learn more from it, but also it give us some happiness that can not be replaced.
