TOPIC: ISSUE144 - "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."

*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
DATE: 2007-7-20 10:49:03

As we define it, art always has lasting value. It brings people and society sense of beauty and enjoyment. People all know that it is artist that creates art, not critic, so it is easy to conclude that artist gives society something of lasting value. But when we think about it on the other hand, it is not so reasonable for the critic also plays an important role in the presenting to the society of something of lasting value.

Let us first talk about the arrangement of artist. In my point of view, there are two sayings. One is the people that live on selling and showing their art works, another is the people that create all arts by no means of making money, such as people decorning their houses. As to the latter one, it is not apparent that they make society something of lasting value. However, the former one does give society something that is valuable for people's enjoyment, enlightening, and so on. Spirital possession and material possession as it divides, artists give society the spirital one. Do you remember the feeling of the first glance of Vinace the culprature? Haven't you shocked by her beauty? When you listen to <fate>, how can you not impressed by the strength and willingness of fighting with the fate? They not only give us the shake of spirit, but also influence us for a long time in the life after. To the society, the art works will pass down generation by generation and spread this spirit broader and broader. We call this something of lasting value.

Then what about the critics, do they really can not give the society something of lasting value? I have no idea if you have the experience as following: when you appreciate a paint, or a period of music, you find out that those art seems nothing to you. Facing at something that you cannot understand, you will be very puzzled. Luckily, we have the critic. Their insightful analysis and vivid description always bring us happy and easy agreement. The society will remember an art work only when it is understood by a large group of people and thus it can have the lasting value. Consequently, we can see the critic as a passer, a bridge which links art to most people, in order to give society something of lasting value. Without them, art and society will be isolated for the art which only comes to peoples’ lives can it be valuable and will be everlasting.

All in all, it is artists that create the art works, which provide the material base for things that have lasting value. Further, it is critics that broaden the effects of art and link people with art works no matter they are easy or hard to understand. As a conclusion, they are both needed in giving society something of lasting value, and our society is just like this as we have so many precious arts passed down from long ago.

As we define it, art always has lasting value. It brings people and society sense of beauty and enjoyment. People all know that it is (是不是应该有一个冠词)artist that creates art, not critic, so it is easy to conclude that artist gives society something(少用thing这样的万能指代词) of lasting value(病句). However, when we think about it on the other hand, it is not so reasonable for the critic also plays an important role in the presenting to the society of something of lasting value. Let us first talk about(最好不要非正式表达法) the arrangement of artist. In my point of view, there are two sayings. One is the people that live on selling and showing their art works, another is the people that create all arts by no means of making money, such as people decorning(拼错了吧?) their houses. As to the latter one, it is not apparent that they make society something of lasting value. However, the former one does give society something that is valuable for people's enjoyment, enlightening, and so on. Spirital(spiritual) possession and material possession as it divides, artists give society the spirital(spiritual) one. Do you remember the feeling of the first glance of Vinace the culprature(这是什么词?)? Haven't you shocked by her beauty? 尽量减少用缩写和第一人称而且这个句子似乎少一个be动词) When you listen to <fate>(不要用书名号), how can you not impressed by the strength and willingness of fighting with the fate?(正确的表达是Beethoven’s 5th Symphony They not only give us the shake of spirit, but also influence us for a long time in the life after. To the society, the art works will pass down generation by generation and spread this spirit broader and broader. We call this something of lasting value. Then what about the critics, do they really cannot give the society something of lasting value? I have no idea if you have the experience as following: when you appreciate paint, or a period of music, you find out that that art seems nothing to you. Facing at something that you cannot understand, you will be very puzzled. Luckily, we have the critic. Their insightful analysis and vivid description always bring us happy and easy agreement.
