TOPIC: ISSUE48 - "The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."

The speaker asserts that the populace creates the history. However, the speaker overrates the significance of the mass people, and I deeply disagree with the assertion. As far as I concerned, groups of people play important roles in the history, however, it is some famous individuals that make the history, without them, the history will be obviously different with it was.

One reason for my fundamentally disagreement with the speaker is that many events in the history is initiated by some individuals. Consider the Second World War, Hitler, the leader of Germany in 1930s, who fomented the Germans to believe that the nation needed expansion, and immediately military occupied Poland at first, after the invasion, the world war broke out. Or consider the industry revolution, for example, during the first industry revolution; it was the steam machine that provoked the revolution, which was invented by a single scientist named James Watt. Moreover, the second industry revolution, during which the electricity power was widely utilized among the world, was a result of the ten years of hardworking of the great British scientist Faraday. In a word, some individuals brought out the events, without them, the history would be different from it was.

Another problem with the assertion is that some events were changed by some elites' efforts. One example that support the statement is that during 1991 to 1998, Chicago Bulls won six champions. Indeed, in some important games, without Michael Jordan, Bulls would lose the game. Just thinking about the sixth game of finals in 1998, when Jazz still leads the score at last 23 seconds, it is Jordan first stole the ball from Karl Malone, and then finished the final shoot in the last second which sent the Bulls to the champion throne. There is another sample supporting the statement. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, American should give their great honor to the President Roosevelt, because he created the New Deal to provide jobs to unemployed people, recover the economy.

Admittedly, the populace is also important to these events. Some people claim that it is unfair to overlook the accomplishments made by the populace. They consider that without thousands British soldiers sacrificing their lives to defeat the attack of German, Hitler would occupied the British's domain at last; without the teammates resisting in the whole game and passing the ball to Jordan, he would have no chance to change the history; also without the supporting from the populace, Roosevelt would have been impeached and have no chance to make out his New Policy. To some extent I agree with the importance of these people who forgotten by the society, which is unjust for them, however, they are only the executors by the directions of few famous people and they cannot create new ideas and methods which are crucial in promoting the history moving on.

In sum, although the groups of people 's contribution is important to some significant events, since they are led by some individuals and these elites initiate the events or change the process of the events, I strongly disagree with the speaker and believe that the most significant events and trends in history were made by the famous few.
