Argument200 (476 words)

Statistics collected from dentists indicate that three times more men than women faint while visiting the dentist. This evidence suggests that men are more likely to be distressed about having dental work done than women are. Thus, dentists who advertise to attract patients should target the male consumer and emphasize both the effectiveness of their anesthetic techniques and the sensitivity of their staff to nervous or suffering patients.

In the argument, the author draws his or her conclusion that dentists should target the male consumer to advertise to attract patients, and in the advertisement, they should emphasize both the effectiveness of their anesthetic techniques and the sensitivity of their staff to nervous or suffering patients. To support the conclusion, the author points out a statistics collected from dentists to suggest that men are more likely to be distressed about having dental work done than women are. At first glance, the argument seems reasonable, yet, after a careful analysis, I find it unpersuasive as it stands.

To begin with, the chief problem is that all the conclusions and suggestions drawn by the author rely on an unwarrantedly statistics. The author provides us no further information about the so-called statistics. We do not know how many patients are involved, and the rate of male patient and female one. Perhaps the population of the sample is too small to represents the overall patients’ situation. We also do not know which kind of dental work do the patients have done, maybe the dental works men have are more complicated and easy to feel hurt. Without considering and ruling out all these possibilities, the author draws his or her conclusion on specious evidence.

Secondly, even if the statistics is true and correct, it still cannot strongly suggest that men are more likely to be distressed about having dental work done than women are. By all accounts, the reasons of faint are various. It is entirely possible that men who faint are sensitive to blood. Or perhaps the dentists treat the female patient much more tenderly and carefully than male patient, so that men are more likely to faint. In a short, the author cannot convince me that men are easily to be distressed about having dental work done than women are.

Thirdly, the author overlooks other influencing factors in the process of drawing the conclusion that dentists who advertise to attract patients should target the male consumer and emphasize both the effectiveness of their anesthetic techniques and the sensitivity of their staff to nervous or suffering patients. Perhaps men seldom have dental problems and the majority of potential consumers are women, then dentists should advertise to target the female rather than male. On the other hand, the author does not suggest providing universal information about the use of anesthetic techniques, especially the side effects, to eliminate the patients’ worries. Without taking all the factors into consideration, the attraction and effect of the advertisement will be undermined.

In the final analysis, the argument relies on weak evidence and not as reasonable as it stands. To bolster it, the author should conduct a further statistics among both male and female patients. Moreover, all influencing factors in an advertisement should be taken into consideration, or it will not achieve the anticipated effects.
