Issue 212 "If a goal is worthy, then any means taken to attain it is justifiable."
As the well-known quotation John Morley, a British statesman, once said, “It is not enough to do good; one must do it the right way”, it means rationality of ways is as important as that of the goal. So people should take proper means rather than by any possible means to achieve their goals that are worthy and justifiable.
We all know that only by setting a goal first can we devote our efforts following a certain means afterwards. While, when it comes to what is a worthy goal, the answer is fairly diverse.Doctors might think earning more money is worthy thing, scientists regard the breakthrough of their experiment is meaningful, companies might aim at winning in the competition, fixers set objective of alluring more people to take drug, and terrorists might target at killiing more people. It is true that as society is a hodgepodge in that every individual is with different ideas, beliefs, attitudes, characters and endless others aspects, people hold different worthy goals. However, such goals should be justifiable, that is to say, they should not harm other people and society. Otherwise, our society might run out of control and ugliness, blood, death and so on congest it. Hence, only those which are justifiably worthy goals deserve people make efforts.
Actually, progress of our society owes largely to people's justifiable goals and their endeavors. Suchgoals offer people the right direction and great drive as well as passion. Consider,Edison, for example, guided by the goal of inventing material of bulb filament,so could he kept his enduring efforts even failed thousands of times, and finallyilluminated the darkness all over the world. Similarly, Abraham Lincoln, the famous American President, who was driven by his aim of abolishing slavery, struggled all his life time to come true such an object. All these people made great efforts to their goals and finally contributed remarkably to the development of society.
Moreover, significant as the aims and attempts are, means we take should never break moral standards and official laws, especially when in the conflicts of individual and social interests. Imagine, if doctors provide patients bogus drugs or immature technology that are not approved by the authority to gain more money, then the patients might be in the huge risk of death. Or if scientistsinvolve human in biochemical experiments in order to get reliable experiment data, our ethics might face great crisis. Similarly, if companies cheat, debase or frame their competitors in order to win in the fierce competition, perhaps the whole market is in a mess. In such cases, though the goals are reasonable, the means they take conflict with ethic or law, consequently harm the society. So we should control our methods in the range that ethic andlaw permit.
Furthermore, even if the means toward a justifiably worthy goal are not against the morality or laws, private cost of such methods should be taken into account. When such cost beyond our capability, then we should stop where it should stop. For a race driver, doubtlessly, it is a glorious object to drive his car to build up a commanding lead in every competition. While, to achieve such a goal, he might involve himself in intensive training at all hours of the day and night. Too intensive training makes him so tired tokeep careful; and he is very likely risking serious wound and disability or even death. Bloodily but truly, if we have to pay a huge private cost, health and life, on a so-called worthy goal of fame and money, then what’s the meaning of doing this?
A worthwhile as well as meaningful goalshould be the one endeavoring for better life and not harm others or oursociety. And means we take to come true such a nice goal should never betrayour ethics and laws, also, the private cost is nonnegligible. Only through this, can we approach the dreamful world we long for.
