147"Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."

Are tradition and modernization incompatible? I concede that modernization has been the worldwide mainstream which is changing or even eliminating tradition to a great extent. However, I do not agree that they are not incompatible. On the contrary, modernization and tradition can be compatible partners improving each other.

Admittedly, the stream of modernization with its overwhelming power sweeps nearly every corner of contemporary world, tradition can not avoid or hold back it either. Consider the shift from the ancient tradition that men work on the farm while women spin at home to the modern custom that both men and women work together in factories or offices, one can find that modernization reduces the dependency of the social production to the male physical power, and thus brings the equality between men and women possible. Moreover, following modernization, modern recreational activities are replacing the traditional ways people relax themselves. Pop songs and films instead of operas and dramas occupy most of people's free time while the latter are depressed and gradually out of the public attention.

However, confronted with the impact of modernization, tradition still play a important role in modern people's lives. For example, since Moses led Jews out from Egypt, his Ten Commandments, no matter they are written on parchments or showed on screens, have been the chief principles for Jewish to rule their words and behaviors. Similarly, Christians, a great part of who live in the countries with the highest level of modernization, decorate Christmas trees, cook turkeys and send presents to each others on every December 25th celebrating the birth of Christ, a tradition formed more than a thousand years ago. Since the tradition like Christmas Day or Ten Commandments deeply roots in the belief of people originating from human moral world, they can defend themselves against the impact from modernization.

Furthermore, tradition to some extent can accelerate modernization while modernization can remove some benighted parts of tradition and improve the gracious ones. Christmas Day, a important west tradition as cited above, is also a stronge sign of modern commerce. Christmas Business has become a important part of business activities in west world even a part of east the results of which usually show the consumers' inclination and thus guide componies' investments next year. On the other hand, the hula dance, a traditional dance which used to be a religious ritual for Hawaiian natives, losts its primitive meaning in the modern age but this enthusiastic gracious dance by itself is maintained and has become famous, attracting tourists all over the world by modern advertisement means.

In sum, modernization actually change our tradition but not exclude it but ameliorate it to some extent while tradition is still a indispensable part of modern life and exerts its influence on modernization.
