“History teaches us only one thing: knowing about the past cannot help people to make important decision today”.

As human society continues along the road of development on all aspects, more and more new demands are being put on making important decisions. Admittedly, the history always cannot provide us with valuable information at first hand because the epoch is changing dramatically. Nevertheless, in my view, people fail to take into account what history could benefit us in varied ways, more or less benefiting our decision making.

Obviously, many people may hold the view that the old moralities or ethics have already tarnished as the time lapsed through history, in that the banal conceptions are not seasoned with modern world. Bogged down in the circumstance filled with competence and pressure, people almost certainly pay much attention on how to promote themselves, regardless of what history could teach us in spiritual levels. For instance, as the Confucianism tells us, only under the psychic state of equanimity could we make correct and comprehensive decision, and maintaining a philanthropic spirit may pilot us to pursuing a harmonious life, that may make sense for improving our mentality health. Additionally, in the scheme of depression, the historic celebrity’s story to some extent could encourage us to hold a vigorous and perseverant character, and help us redesign the striving target.

On the other hand, without considering about history, barely conducting an analysis of present position would mislead people to make partial and inaccurate judgments, therefore the impractical decision appears inevitably. We cannot emphasize the importance of history too much, especially in the economy fields and policy making. Undoubtedly, an experienced CEO of a company will make advisable strategies based with the consideration to history, such as historical data or events, as well as how his or her predecessors dealt with the similar situation. Meanwhile, had a politician omitted to take into account what the country faced in history, he or she would be blind at policy making, consequentially inflicting the heavy loss on the country. Something has been true in the past and continues to be the case in the present.

Not only pondering about history has figured prominently in the area of spirit, economy and policy-making, but it can broaden people’s horizon, thus induces a person to become a wiser decision maker. We may readily remember the failures attributed to the wrong decision making in the past and will not make mistakes for the second time. For instance, as a teenager, I was always dreaming about being a singer someday and neglected studying all the time. But, not before I was warned of being flunked out could I realize the dangerous position I was sitting in and saw clearly about myself and made an important decision to be an engineer in the future. When encountering the similar circumstance, I often recalled the event presented above and calmly made rational decisions, and thus, I succeed now. Plainly, history could help people to think deeply over themselves and enlighten their eyeshot, avoiding straying on the way of life.

In conclusion, knowing the history can contribute in some way to make important decision correctly, as I demonstrate above. However, excessively relying on history could restrict people’s imagination and inspiration, and make the society trapped in the swamp to develop sequentially. So it is no longer a question of whether the history aims in helping making decision, but simply how much we depend on that.
