TOPIC: ISSUE147 - "Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."
WORDS: 566          TIME: 00:45:00          DATE: 2009-2-27 9:13:53

It will surely turn out controversial when people unfairly contradict tradition and modernization. The state asserts that tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them, which, in my opinion, is extremist. I do confess that there are some certain circumstances where tradition and modernization could not find their harmony, however, in most cases, the best way of understanding both tradition and modernization is to find a organic combination between the two.
When we talk about tradition we usually consider belief, value, custom, crafts and so forth. For instance, many of the people's believes - Christianity, Buddhism, and Islam are all ancient religions that were initiated hundreds or even thousands of years ago which are still popular today. Taking another example, the lunar calendar in China, which is proved to exist for over a thousand years, is still widely used among Chinese people in many fields such as cultivating and even calculating one's birthday and age. All these above are passed from generation to generation as time elapses. If we consider tradition and modernization to be incompatible, then how could some traditions passed through hundreds of years instead of being replaced by the modernization that occured in the past?
The best answer to this problem may come out to be that tradition is the source of modernization. So-called modernization often contents urbanization, industrialization, and democratization, while urbanization in habitats comes from ancient tribes, industrialization in social production comes from traditional agriculture, and democratization in politics comes from old regimes. It is the pass of elites in our tradition that makes modernization goes smoothly. Taking a particular look at the vicissitude of democratization which changes from primitive society via slavery and feudalism all the way to today's capitalism - as Carl Marx said. With the elapse of time yesterday's modernization became today's tradition while today's tradition is certainly going to be tomorrow's tradition - this may be the reason why people are always talking about "wheel of history".
Admittedly, there are some certain circumstances where tradition and modernization contradict with each other. While skyscrapers are rising up fewer and fewer people wish to remain staying in the one-story houses. While the nascent democracy is looking for its living space war against traditional religions such as Islam is being waged. It seems that in these instances people can hardly find harmony between tradition and modernization. However, probably we should learn from the attitude of artistic critics toward art - both traditional groups and nascent, modern groups exist compatibly. People appreciate impressionism as well as surrealism, and listen to both classic music (e.g. Beethoven) and music of modernization (e.g. Michael Jackson) - another striking example of inheriting elites of tradition while undergoing modernization.
Generally speaking, the right method of understanding both tradition and modernization is to combine them. After all, modernization comes from tradition and the right way of modernization is to root in tradition. Nations should find their own traditions and reserve them while undergoing modernization. The losing of traditions is a catastrophe to all human civilization.
In sum, I strongly disagree with the extremist state that tradition and modernization are incompatible and one must choose between them. Tradition and modernization are all irreplaceable to the development of human civilization. People should find the right attitude towards tradition - to remain the elites while ignore the outdates while enjoying the benefits brought by modernization.
