TOPIC: ISSUE130 - "How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society."

In this statement, the speaker provided us with two ideas. One is that the future of our society is determined by children's socialization; the other is that our ability to raise children properly is not well-developed yet. Though it maybe tempting to agree with the speaker's assertions, I keep an opposite opinion that both of them are dubious according to the empirical evidence.

First, it must be admitted that socialization plays an significant part on the development of the society, which children must be trained for. For example, during people's school life, we learned how to deal with conflicts with others, and any child who did something that is harmful to other people would be punished for the improper behavior. Thus people gain knowledge about how to live in harmony with others in the society.

However, the speaker's one assertion that children's socialization determines the destiny of society is an obvious overstatement. After all, it is not the only one nor is it the most crucial factor. Take innovation as an example, it is one of the most important characteristics of a child. If people were not encouraged to create new ideas during their childhood, few inventions would be existed.
Undoubtedly no one will overlook the contribution of Newton, one of the leading scientists and philosophers, whose bad temper is well-known, and who remained single all his life. Though people may say that Newton was not properly socialized in his youth, his theory of motion and exploration of gravity had really changed our world dramatically. Other qualities of children such as perseverance, raw intelligence, parental influence and independence are also helpful in making a difference to our life. Consequently, socialization is definitely not the vital factor on determining the destiny of the society, so the exaggeration made by the speaker is not proper.

Secondly, no evidence can support the claim of the speaker that we are not equal to raise children who can help bring about a better society. According to our history of human being, it is revealed that the society, though move backwards from time to time, is advancing steady and generally. Nowadays, different ideas are much more widely accepted than it used to be. People enjoys easily access to medication, education and recreation. An increasing number of people would devote themselves to charities, helping people with physical or mental challenges. We cannot deny that some severe problems such as poverty, violence and war still remain to be solved, but things are getting better and better these days due to the efforts of human being. Conflicts can be solved in peaceful ways such as negotiation; people once lived in less developed areas are now enjoying clean water safe food. How can one say that our society is not getting better? Furthermore, our ability to raise children who can make our world a better place is beyond doubt.

In the final analysis, our society is proceeding at a velocity that faster than it ever was, and the future of the world is not fundamentally determined by the socialization, but rather by other characteristics as listed above. So the speaker's two statements begs questions, if we are circumspective to the situations.
