题目:ARGUMENT238 - The following appeared in a memorandum from the president of Mira Vista College to the college's board of trustees.

"At nearby Green Mountain College, which has more business courses and more job counselors than does Mira Vista College, 90 percent of last year's graduating seniors had job offers from prospective employers. But at Mira Vista College last year, only 70 percent of the seniors who informed the placement office that they would be seeking employment had found full-time jobs within three months after graduation, and only half of these graduates were employed in their major field of study. To help Mira Vista's graduates find employment, we must offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their resumés and interviewing skills."

In this argument, the arguer concludes that Mira Vista College should offer more courses in business and computer technology and teach their students the skills of writing resumes and interviewing in order to help their students to find jobs. To support his argument he cites the successful example of Green Mountain College and compare it with Misa Vista. However, the arguer suffers with several fallacies for his absence of information and unfairly comparison.

Firstly, the arguer fails to convince me the condition of graduates' employment in Green Mountain is better than that in Misa Vista. The arguer doesn't provide the accurate number of graduates who have already find jobs. Even though the percentage in Green Mountain is higher than that in Misa Vista, the total number of graduates in these two school are unknown. What's more, the arguer unfairly compares the percentage of graduates who find jobs in Green Mountain without time limits with that in Mira Vista in three months. May be the 90 percent graduates took a whole year to find jobs. In addition, whether these  jobs are good enough or in the graduates major field of study are also not mentioned. Without all these information, it is irresponsible to say that the condition of graduates' employment in Green Mountain is better than that in Mira Vista.

Secondly, even if the employment condition in Green Mountain were indeed better, the causal relationship between business courses and higher employment rate is still suspicious. I find no sign that the arguer rule out other interfering factors that may exert an influence in job finding. It is entirely possible that the majors in Green Mountain College meet the need of society or the students there take a part in more social activities, but the effect of business courses is not obvious. Without taking all these factors into account, it is questionable to assert that business courses is the cause of the higher employment rate.

Thirdly, even if it were truly due to the business course that the graduates in Green Mountain College achieve more chances to taking up jobs, the arguer fails to ensure that the same high rate of graduates employment will take place in Mira Vista College if they take the same method. The arguer provide no information that the majors in these two colleges are same. The successful method in Green Mountain may not suit the students in Mira Vista for the reason that their further career may not link with business. Unless the arguer offer more evidence about the similarity of these two colleges, his conclusion will be unwarranted.

To sum up, the arguer doesn't  lend a direct and effective support to his argument. To strengthen his conclusion, more information about the graduates in Green Mountain College and credible evidence about the causal relationship between business courses and employment are indispensable. And the similarity of Green Mountain and Mira Vista is also obligatory.
