SPROUL HALL

ＳＡＴＨＥＲ ＧＡＴＥ

bridge over Strawberry Creek leading to the heart of the campus. The gate was donated by Jane K. Sather , a benefactor of the university, in memory of her late husband Peder Sather .

Designed by John Galen Howard , it was completed in 1910. Atop the gate are eight panels of bas-relief figures, with four nude men representing the disciplines of law, letters, medicine, and mining and four nude women representing the disciplines of agriculture, architecture, art, and electricity. They were sculpted by Professor Earl Cummins. When the panels were first installed, public outrage over these nude figures led Sather to demand their removal. 67 years later, they were rediscovered and reinstalled.

Originally, the gate served as the terminus of Telegraph Avenue, marking the University's south entrance. (The circle in front of the gate served as a turning point for the trolleys coming from Oakland .) The University later expanded further south of Strawberry Creek, and the gate is now well separated from the city streets by Sproul Plaza.

DURANT

Durant Hall, which houses the East Asian Library, is one of the many buildings on campus - and elsewhere - constructed with granite. In front of its south entrance are two Chinese lion figures sculpted from marble.

Marble is a metamorphic rock composed of calcite like limestone and travertine. This marble transformed from limestone or travertine under high pressure and temperature. The clear evidence of layering seen in the travertine of Giannini Hall is no longer present in the marble.

VALLEY LIFE SCIENCE

The Valley Life Sciences Building, popularly known as "VLSB", is the home of the UC Museum of Paleontology. Although not open to the public, the UCMP houses a collection of numerous fossils that is particularly famous for its dinosaurs, some of whose bones are on display in the central corridor outside the Bioscience and Natural Resource Library. Fossils help in the study of evolution and in fact provide very strong evidence supporting the theory. Fossils are also very important in the dating of the sedimentary rocks in which they are found.

Doe Library has some exquisite decorative stones in the interior. Pink limestones (with stylolites due to pressure solution) and white marble are both composed of calcite, and fizz with diluted hydrochloric acid. There is a nice stone bench near the main entrance made of high-temperature metamorphic rocks. These rocks probably started out as shales and were altered by the high temperature of an igneous body. The large slab inscribed "The University Library", hoisted to its current position on the north side of the building in 1909, is made of granite.

SATHER TOWER

known more commonly as The Campanile for bearing close resemblance to the Campanile de San Marco in Venice , is a bell and clock tower and the most well known and ubiquitous building on the  campus. Completed in 1914 , the tower stands 307 feet tall. Designed by John Galen Howard , founder of the School of Architecture, it was funded by and named after Jane K. Sather, a benefactor of the university. It chimes every hour.

An elevator takes visitors to an observation deck 200 feet up the tower, providing sweeping views of the campus, surrounding hills, San Francisco and the Golden Gate . Above the observation platform lies a sixty-one bell carillon which plays a concert every weekday morning, noontime, and late afternoon. At Noon on the Friday before the start of finals, They're Hanging Danny Deever in the Morning is played. Following that, the carillon is silent until the end of finals.

The Campanile also houses many of the Paleontology department's fossils.

WURSTER(建筑+城市规划)

"Concrete, the modern building material." Wurster Hall is made of it. Concrete manufacturing in California is one of the state's most important geological industries. Concrete is a mixture of cement (a combination of minerals, such as calcite and clays, finely ground and mixed with water) and assorted rocks (aggregate), and can be confused with natural rocks. It can also deteriorate, particularly if steel reinforcement (rebar) is too close to the surface.  

Ironically, the decomposing Wurster Hall, a "neo-brutalist"-style building ranked by many as the ugliest building on campus, is home to the Architecture Department. Professor Charles Benton's page of aerial kite photography of Wurster (complete with memories of the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake) offers a far more flattering view. The building is currently being retrofitted.
