题目:ARGUMENT1 - The following appeared in a memorandum written by the vice president of Nature's Way, a chain of stores selling health food and other health-related products.
"Previous experience has shown that our stores are most profitable in areas where residents are highly concerned with leading healthy lives. We should therefore build our next new store in Plainsville, which has many such residents. Plainsville merchants report that sales of running shoes and exercise clothing are at all-time highs. The local health club, which nearly closed five years ago due to lack of business, has more members than ever, and the weight training and aerobics classes are always full. We can even anticipate a new generation of customers: Plainsville's schoolchildren are required to participate in a 'fitness for life' program, which emphasizes the benefits of regular exercise at an early age."

In this argument the author makes a conclusion that setting a new store in Plainsville will certainly make profits for the company. It seems reasonable, but actually suffers a lot of logic flaws which weaken the argument.

First, the arguer makes an assumption that residents in Plainsville are concerned with leading healthy lives all because of the good sales of sports clothes. But there is no evidence to prove it, because many other reasons can lead to the high sales. For example, running shoes may be on count and they are really cheap enough to attract people. And futhermore exercise clothing may be very popular in Plainsville due to some famous basketball player. So, considering these possibilties, one can not assume that residents in Plainsville are willing to lead healthy lives.

Second, though the local health club in the town has opened after five years, it can not represent that residents in Plainsville want a healthy life, not to mention they need health-related products. Residents can do exercises to build their body as well as make friends in the  club, so they may aim for the health as well as having fun. So, we do not know if residents are really concerning with leading healthy lives. Even though I admit that they care about the health than before, residents do not show any interest on the products which are supplied by Nature's Way. They are two different ways. So without clarifing what exactly the residents need, the author makes his evidence useless again.

Third, though children are required to take in the fitness for life program, the arguer does not tell us the detail infomation of the program. For example, do children take the program together at school or they exercize seperately at home? Do children need some speccial food which is more healthy than the normal one? If they do not need them, the Nautre's Way will make not any profit from the program. And futhermore, though these children know how to lead a health life, the have no money to buy the related products, because it all depends on their parents who will pay for everything for a child. Consequently, this program really can not bring any hope for the sales of health-related products, and the author should give us more information about that program, including how does it works, and what it really needs.

In sum, the author fails to make his conclusion convinced enough due to the unreasonable assumption and some other logic flaws. Only if the arguer works out a deep study of the maket in Plainsville can he make the argument more than an emotional appeal.
