Why should people choose? It originates from people's needs that are just like the ancient Pyramid, on the bottom of which is one's basic needs such as the needs of eating, drinking; but on the top of which is one's psychological needs such as the needs of choosing a job, choosing a partner. As to the basic needs, there are no choices that are left to people, however, as far as the psychological needs are concerned, the absence of choice is a situation that is very rare.

When it comes to the basic needs, people are left with no choices but to survive. For instance, people have no choice but to drink water, eat food to maintain everyday life. People have no choice but to sleep to be energetic the next day. Some detractors may argue that even if a person is hungry and thirsty he/she can still choose not to eat, to drink. It is indeed the case, however will there be human beings on earth if everyone choose not to eat even if they are hungry, not to drink, even if they are thirsty? Absolutely not. Actually, as far as the basic needs are concerned, human beings are no different from inferior species. For example, birds will emigrate to the warmer places after the climate becomes cool. In this sense, human beings are similar to animals.

However, we differ from other inferior spices because we have superior needs to be pursued after our basic needs are satisfied. For example, after a person can at least maintain his/her everyday needs such as drinking, eating, and sleeping, he/she will consider which school to go to, what job to select, and who should be his/her spouse. In this sense, people have plenty of choices, and the absence of choice is a very rare circumstance. Admittedly, from time to time, people are always complaining that life is so hard that leaves them with only one choice. For instance, in order to lead a better life, one must choose the difficulty of hard working rather than the love of ease. However, I believe that why people think like this originate from their human nature--the willing to pursue the better things, as well as the dislike to suffer from what they don't like, and as a matter of fact there are always plenty of choices that are left to people. Two extreme circumstances will help to lend credible support to my assertion. Let's consider two common but tough issues to people in the society--divorce, and suicide. When a couple cannot get along well with each other, they seem to have no choice but to divorce; and when a person finds the life to be meaningless, it seems that he/she has no choice but to die. However, that needs not be the case. A couple whose marriage is at the edge of divorcing may choose to consul friends and relatives to help mitigate the marriage crisis, and then try to live happily with his/she mate; similarly, a person who find he/she has no choose but to die can take into consideration the feeling of the people who still love him/her, if they know he/she has committed suicide. If he/she doesn't want to make them sad, he/she can choose to live up to face with all the difficulties in front of him/her. Therefore, we can see that even under such extreme cases, people still have choices, let alone other less extreme situations. People's misunderstanding that they always have no choice actually spring from their willing to make life better.

In conclusion, apart from human's basic needs, the absence of choice is a circumstance that is very, very race. And, if there has to be, it actually originates from our willing to pursue the happiness of ourselves, the well-being of the whole society, as well as the prosperity of all the human beings.
