I'm glad you brought up the question of our investigations into the makeup of the Earth's interior.




In fact, since this is the topic of your reading assignment for next time, let me spend these last few minutes of class talking about it.




There were several important discoveries in the early part of this century that helped geologists develop a more accurate picture of the Earth's interior.




The first key discovery had to do with seismic waves.


Remember they are the vibrations caused by earthquakes.


Well, scientists found that they traveled thousands of miles through the Earth's interior.



This finding enabled geologists to study the inner parts of the Earth.



You see, these studies revealed that these vibrations were of two types: compression or P waves and shear or S waves.







And researchers found that P waves travel through both liquids and solids, while S waves travel only through solid matter.






In 1906, a British geologist discovered that P waves slowed down at a certain depth but kept traveling deeper.




On the other hand, S waves either disappeared or were reflected back, so he concluded that the depth marked the boundary between a solid mantle and a liquid core.





Three years later, another boundary was discovered that between the mantle and the Earth's crust.



There's still a lot to be learned about the Earth.


For instance, geologists know that the core is hot.



Evidence of this is the molten lava that flows out of volcanoes.



But we're still not sure what the source of the heat is.

The reading passage totally opposed the listening lecture. The author thought that young people are reading far less literature than they used to. However, the speaker asserted that they just changed the form of reading literature.

Firstly, the author thought that by reading less literature, the reading public is missing out on important benefits because the literature can provide the intellectual stimulation and encourage the imaginations, empathize with others, and expand our understanding of language. on the other hand, the speaker hold the opinion that like scientists and musicians, they also can provide high quality of understanding and education.

Secondly, the author thought that missing out on the benefits of literature is not the only problem. Instead of the literature, there are more and more superficial, poorly written, and intellectually undemanding books. Also, instead of sitting down with a book, more and more people like to watch TV, or a video, or surfing on the Internet. But the speaker believed the author's opinion are wrong and nowadays the culture has changed. There are plenty of movies and musics that create more interesting cultures for us. when you watch a wonderful movie, did you get the same or more benefits than that of the literature.

Finally, the author thought the trend of reading less literature will lead to fewer serious writers and furthermore will decline the standards of today's readers. On the contrary,  the speaker thought that this is the author's fault because their writing literature is too difficult to understand.  All of these will lead to the decline of the interest of the readers.

Some people say that the Internet provides people with a lot of valuable information.
Others think access to so much information creates problems.
Which view do you agree with?

Each coin has two sides. In my opinion,  the Internet has more benefits than its disadvantages. You can search and get some important  information that confused you. You can keep in touch with your best friends on the internet.
First of all,  recently I have confused about the makeup of the Earth's interior. Without the internet,  I have to read a lot of books but there are plenty of books about this term. So I can't find it instantly.  But  I can search the relevant information about the Earth on the internet and I feel satisfied about  the researching result.
Secondly, I can keep in touch with my best friends on the internet. I have been the united states for four  months and I live on my own without the caring of my parents . Sometimes I feel lonely  and helpless. even though we are not staying at the same place,  I can often chat with my best friends on the internet and we are still intimated.
Finally, the internet is very convenient and I often purchase some goods through the internet and don't worry about the taxes' problem  and the time that I will spend commuting between the two places. I can just stay at home and enjoy my life. When I received the products purchased on the internet and I felt surprised and I enjoy the feeling when I opened the package of the products.

Listen to a professor talking to a class.

So, you see, basic littlness(physical illness) can have cycle logical courses(psychological causes). Now, we just have time to introduce another interesting example of intruaction(the interaction) between the mind and the body----Placebos. Placebos---- may be for(maybe you’ve heard) them called sugar pills---- are harmless substances---- not are(always) sugar---- that use ruting ungroup(are used routinely on groups of) sick people experiments. These experiments test the factive this(effectiveness of) new drugs. One group is given the new drug, the other group is given the pocabal(a placebo) and the results are measure. As you might guess, some of people who receive the new drug get better, surprisingly, however, some of the placebo group also get better.

Why? Well, it's an interesting question, one which doctors can quite answer. Some of the group may get(have gotten) better on the rule(on their own) without any treatment at all. But the research has shown that the very active(act of) taking imedication(a medication) that you think we(will) make you better. Often does make a few(you feel) better. Have you ever taking a iceb(taken an aspirin) and felt better in five minutes? Icepring(Aspirin) doesn't work that fast, does it? Basically, if you believe you will get better----sometimes you do.

The history how doctors and healers at use(have used) the mind-body connection to heal(cure people) is long and interesting. But I see that it's time to close, so I’ll have to cover this in the next class. You’ll have to hold your questions on this topic to(til) then, before you go, I have some handouts for you concerning the midterm exams next week.

Listen to a history professor talking to her class about a famous person in the United States history.
Well, in answer to your question, several women actively percatpa(participated) in the Civil War. The one that came(comes) immediately to mind is Mary Worker(Walker). She is important, because she is the only women ever to be a wooder the congrational matter awaner(awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor). As you know, this mattal(medal) is given to people who've served the United States with exceptional brivry(bravery).
In addition, She was the only female position(physician) in either of two armies that fall(fought) in that war. Even though she had two medical degrees, many officers made her life difficult because they cannot(didn’t) believe that a woman should be a doctor. However, she refused to back down to(and) leave the army. In fact, she res(risked her) life several times during the war, and was even captured the(at) one point. She was so relist.(But she was soon released.)
Umm, after the war, she was arrested several times for Wary Pence(wearing pants). And although congrance(Congress) eventually try to take a matter way(her medal away). She refused to give it back and continue to where(wear) what ever(wherever) she went. She died in 1919, a year before women received the right boat(to vote), which...wait me by(brings me to my) next point.
