I can't totally agree with the statement that culture perpetuates its favorite ideas and discredits the ideas it fears primarily through formal education, in two respects. First, education may turn against the ideas culture favors. Second, the prevailing ideas of culture is preserved not only by means of formal education, but also by means of media.
To some extent, education does serve as a mean by which culture perpetuates its prevailing ideas and discredits the ideas it fears. Students in schools are taught to behavior in this way, and not in that way, and to accept some specific ideas and refuse other certain concepts. It is in this way that culture perpetuate its favorite concepts and discredits the ideas it fears. However, in schools, it may also develop some ideas that culture fears. Students in schools may challenge the ideas accumulated and preserved on the textbook, and put forward their own perspective on certain subjects. This is especially true in college and university studies. In fact, college and universities specialize in encouraging and nurturing students' skills of critical analysis and the ability to put forward new viewpoints which may oppose the culture's favorite ideas. As a result, education do serve as a mean by which culture perpetuates its favorite ideas, and at the same time, education may also turn against the ideas culture favors.
What is more, culture can perpetuate its favorite ideas and discredit the ideas it fears not only through formal education but also through media. Media, as known, has great power in influencing people's ideas. Broadcast television and newspapers, as two main sorts of media, have great influence on public. They not only can bring great sufferings to a person by publishing details of his private life, they can even overthrow a government. They can lead people's ideas to where they want. Another kind of media with increasing influence is Internet. With the fast development of technology, Internet provides us great information about the world. More and more people obtain information through Internet. On Internet, there are huge numbers of facts, figures, articles and debates, all of which influence people's ideas significantly. The influence of media is so great that it do serve as an important mean by which culture perpetuate its favors and discredits the ideas it fears.
In summary, education do serves as the mean that culture uses for perpetuating its favors and discreditting the ideas it fears, however, education may also turn against the ideas culture favors. What is more, media also plays an important role in delivering the ideas of culture. |
