TOPIC: ISSUE40 - "Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."

in this assertion, the speaker claims scholars and researchers should pursue their individual interests, rather than concern with whether their work makes a contribution to the whole society.it seems plausible at first glance, while ignoring the complexity behind the two aspects.as far as i am concerned,i would appreciate in striking a balance between them.
admittedly, individual interest, which is the core of research, promotes people to strive for the truth of unknown world.the history is full of these examples.to illustrate the idea we should not go so far to find a example that,Mahone,a Japanese chemist, who find the nanotube in solution,is famous in the nanoscience area.he is very interest in the particular phenomena in the thermodynamic of a special solution, and he collected sea of data, calculating on them, and with the help of the scan implements, again and again, never felt boring, and finally he found the nanometer structure, what is very prevailing in today's material research.in this example,we can get a impression about the role interest plays in research .so ,individual interest really benefits the scholars and researchers in some area.
however, here the question is,scholars and researchers should not be concerned only with their individual interest,no matter how unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem.could you image a scenery that most of people in the country are living in a poor condition, without rights to accept education, even living in a danger area full of wars?yes,it really in some other develop countries.could the researchers and scholars in this country pursue only their individual interests at a large cost?while comparing to the immediately serves such as foods, clothes, and so forth basic necessities, especially when the research they are doing is mostly unlikely to bring to produce and benefits the whole society soon.if the researchers and scholars continued to pursue their individual interests ,where the human rights given nature of them have gone?and where the future of other people would be?so scholars and researchers should not be concerned only with their individual interest, that depends on the matter how the society is going.
indeed,to supervise the scholars' and researchers' researches is the duty of the government, who supervise the tax revenue allocation, and decide which part of society need a priority choice.
in sum,to make the claim more compelling, balance between the individual interests of scholars and researchers and the real world is needed to strike.we can not stand in one side and ignores the other one |
