188.A new report suggests that men and women experience pain very
differently from one another, and that doctors should consider these
differences when prescribing pain medications. When researchers
administered the same dosage of kappa opioids-a painkiller-to 28 men and
20 women who were having their wisdom teeth extracted, the women reported
feeling much less pain than the men, and the easing of pain lasted
considerably longer in women. This research suggests that kappa opioids
should be prescribed for women whenever pain medication is required,
whereas men should be given other kinds of pain medication. In addition,
researchers should reevaluate the effects of all medications on men versus
women.
The conclusion in this argument is that kappa opiods, a kind of painkiller, should be given to women instead of men whenever pain medicine is needed. The conclusion, which is drown from a reasearch, sounds reasonable at first thought. However, if we take a deep look into it, we can find that several crictical flaws seriously undermine the line of reasoning.
In the first place, the argument is based on a questionable reasserch. The 28 men and 20 women may not be representatives of all men and women in general. For one thing, a sample size of 48 can not lead to a reliable research conclusion. For another, the auther dosen't mention where the tester come from. Maybey all of them come from a certern place where women are more sensitive to painkillers than men do.
In the second place, the auther overlooks other factors that might have contributed to the amount of pain these patients experienced. For instance, heavier people usually experience less pain than those who are slimmer do. Similarly, elder person are usually less sensitive to pain than the younger. What's more, the mood and healthy condition of the testers also have things to do with their sense of pain.
Moreover, even if kappa opiods are more effective to women than men, the conclusion that kappa opiods should be prescribed to women whenever pain medicine is needed is not valid. Without comparision to other pain medicine, we can not say for sure whethwe kappa opiods are the best or not. Meanwhile, without futher reaserch, the verdict that kappa opiod shouldn't be given to men is also invalid. It is entirely possible that kappa opiod is still the most effective pain medicine for men.
Finally, another unwarranted assumption is that reasearchers should reevaluate the effect of all medications on men versus women. Since there are millions kinds of pain medicine in the market, it is a waste of money and time to reevaluate every kind of them.
The original intention and thought of the reasearch are of great sense. However, the conclusion of the research are not dependable enough. The researchers shouldtry to futher their study, enlarge the sample size, evaluate other pain medicine etc. and they will com to more effective conclusion. |
