"Governments must ensure that their major cities receive the financial support they need in order to thrive, because it is primarily in cities that a nation's cultural traditions are preserved and generated."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Is it necessary for government ensure their major cities receive the financial support in terms of preserving and generating culture traditions? Admittedly, cultural identity is an indispensable part of a natiion' character, and it is also the responsibility of government to preserve its cultural traditons. However, compared to major cities, I think, cultural trdition in the rural area deserves more attention, not only for its own value in the whole cultural traditon system, but also for the badly needs of financial support by government.
With the overwhelming impact of globalization, the cultural traditions in different big cities are being homogenized, which definitely leads to less traditons preserved and generated. As we known, globalization has become an irreversible trend for the development of a country, and it also inevitably strongthens the learning of pattern of development from rich cities, which obviously results in a generally similar scene in different cities, such as numerous towering skyscrapers, prosperous commercial streets, streams of luxury automobiles, and the busy crowds. All of these represent the general image of a big city, and even make travelers have no idea whether they are in Tokyo or Shanghai, London or New York, and undoubtedly, it is hardly possible for a nation tradition to generate in such a similar suitation . Even with the modernization drive, a lot of new skyscrapers are taking the lands of ancient buildings which are important parts of the whole cultural traditon system, and all of these are actually counterproductive for the prservation of the tradition, such as Quadrate Yard Buildings in china, which have to give in to more and more huge constructions under such a modern atmosphere.
In contrast with big cities, rural areas might be better for a nation's cultual traditions to preserve and generate. The rural areas, with lower population density, may have less interference from outside, and it obviously provides a good environment to preserve the traditon, even for a traditon come being. Morever, people living in such a condition may be less stressful than outside, and they are pleased to enjoy life, and doubtless, more and more excellent cultural traditons may be developed, such as folk song, folk dance, folk tale, which carry a strong color of the countryside. Even one of the most popular musical styles Jazz, which originated from the negroes in cotton fields and tobacco fields, developed in the course of their farming work. Attributed to rich experience in life, people are likely to be inspired to commite the creative activity of culture.
Although, there are plentiful cultural traditions in countryside, they have to face the danger of diminshing, and they need the financial support to be preserved more badly than big cities. Generally speaking, big cities have their own industries and businesses to support themselves, however, countryside may in a poorer condition than cities. In some rural areas, people suffer from starvation, let alone encourage them to protect the local cultural traditons. Even in order to avoid starvation, local villagers are will to destroy the cultural traditons, and exchange them for enough money. Even though wealthier areas do not have so serious problem, the funds for maintain the cultual traditons is really a heavy fanancial burden for them, and the needs of the support from government is inevitable.
to sum up, although big cities have cultural traditons, compared to villages, they may have capital source to support themslves. However, villages, on one hand, might be better to preserve and generate cultures, on the other hand, more badly they need financial support from government than cities. And above all, I maintain my assertion that the rural area of a nation deserve more attention from the government for the cultural traditons than major cities. |
