In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach.

In today's rapid changing ages, the faculty should constantly enlarge their knowledge and improve the quality of their instruction, so that to come with the pace of the advancement of the society. To work outside the academic world relevant to the courses they teach s a very good method. I fundamentally agree with the author, however, with further consideration, I think that in some academic field, the method should not be use.

As a college teacher, to work outside the academic world relevant to the courses they teach may have some advantages to their teaching as follows. First, working outside could stimulate the interest of the researchers, enlarge their knowledge and experience, and know to trend of the . With working in the society, they could encounter more persons who research in their field, communication between them are beneficial to each other, at the same time , more easily find the flaws of themselves , which would promote the academic knowledge develop in the fields. Second, working with the practical problems is easy for them to find some essential information which are not contained in the book. As we all know, a lot of the inventions come from the practice experiment .In addition, since the teacher enlarges his own knowledge, well-known about the practical facts, and find flaws in his study, the method o f teaching would be improved.

Moreover, the teacher work outside the academic world relevant to the courses they teach will benefit for the application of the academic knowledge. Firstly, to apply the academic knowledge into the practical problems, and then to transform into more new products for making the people's lives   convenient, and then with more and more profits earning , these funds would be use to advance the academic research and the improvement of the quality of the instructions. Therefore, the good circulation in the academic field would have established in the academic field..

However, not all the academic fields should take the suggestion. In some fundamental pure academic field the suggestion is almost unuseful for their research and teaching, the most important tings in front of them is to be clear with the theory which is generalized by the predecessors and publish the academic production, not the practical products. Of course, communication is also very important for them, they can choose the other methods for the advancement, such as to take part in some academic meeting ,or go to the other universities or colleges as a visit- professor.

To sum up, the faculty should based on the characteristic of their own academic fields to decide whether they  work outside the academic world relevant to the courses they teach could be beneficial to  improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level.(459 words)
