"In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
提纲:部分赞同。
1, 应该让应用学科如the speaker 所作, 这样可以inspire their student , learn something fresh insight,
2, find some up-to-date subject去研究,这样研究成果更有社会价值,这样还能为容易申请到研究基金。
3,对于一些纯理论的学科,一方面社会上很难找到对口的工作,另一方面学科本身需要的是纯学术上的研究。
正文:
Should all faculty be required to work outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach so as to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, as the speaker asserts? I concede that, for practical disciplines, such a requirement does bring fresh insight and up-to-date information as well as practical experience into their disciplines; however, for the pure theoretical field, working outside for the faculty will turn out to be meaningless.
I concede that it is necessary for the faculty of the practical disciplines to gain experience from the required work outside. In some certain fields whose knowledge should keep up with the developing world, such as computer, business, management, etc, as we all know, the relevant information is overwhelming and updating with the development of software technology, market mechanics, and managing conception. On this case, the faculty in these fields go to the challenging work[chinglish] outside the academic world[这个句子两个动词了] will not only accumulate precious experience for themselves but[also] come back[chinglish] with the fresh insight and up-to-date information for their students, who will graduate from the school and devote [themselves]to the real world work competition[应该调一下顺序work competition in the real world]. In the realm of computer, for example, every day when we surf the internet we can find [a] myriad of newly designed programs, updated game software, and advanced computer technology, which may be missed by the students gaining the textbook knowledge out of fashion from their professors, who are absent of practical experience. What is more, the teachers with experience will provide instructive opinions about the work orientation of [to] their students, this point, in my view, is crucial for a ready-to-graduate student to make a correct choice in the complicated situation.
In addition, the chance of working outside will help the professor ferret for the cutting-edge and controversial issues for their research and publication. Appropriate subjects will add practical and marketing value to the research productions[是不是要说是研究成果具有实用价值,这样表述好像不地道], what is more, the professor will gain great honor and respect in the areas of their specialty from the international level. The students will to some extent draw an inspiration from this special experience and make great endeavor on their study.
However, for those in the pure theoretical domain, it seems meaningless for the faculty to be compelled to work outside the academic world. For one thing, there is merely appropriate work relevant to the courses they teach. One needs look no further than the realm of mathematics, whose professors hold the capability of logically proving the theorems, inferring the formulas, and solving the equations rather than some practical skills. Imagine that how a manager of a company would offer a mathematics professor whose brains full of theorems, formulas, and equations a job, which requires the ability of analyzing the market’s needs, distributing certain tasks, and negotiating with the copartner.[据我所知,数学专家待遇颇高,并且应用数学就是为实际服务的] For the other, working outside will make some negative consequences to the research of the professors in the pure theoretical disciplines. From many stories of the scientist[scientists] in mathematics, chemistry, and physics, we can draw a conclusion that those who make great contribution to the above field must have the spirit of burying themselves in the research all day long, forgetting meals and rest[chinglish废寝忘食是forget food and sleep], in my view, the outside distraction will moiré or less influence them and the work will waste them a lot of time to do something seeming not appropriate for them, what is the worst, they may get a bad mask of their work. Accordingly, the right people in the right place will make the world running efficiently and effectively.[你是要说对纯理论工作影响研究,但这和教学无关,换成影响了本应用于研究教学的时间和精力会否好些?]
To sum up, I agree with the speaker that, in some practical fields, it is necessary for the faculty to work outside the academic world to gain some useful experience and information for their students as well as themselves; however, in some pure theoretical disciplines, in my view, it is meaningless to do so to distract the professor’s theoretical research. |
