50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
WORDS: 562 TIME: 00:55:00 DATE: 2007-8-8 9:37:32
What weighs the quality of instruction at the college and university level? Will faculties do better if they go out of the campus and work in profession relevant to course they teach, as the speaker asserts? In my point of view, the speaker views the issue too extreme, while some subjects are fit in such ways, some are not. It would be determined on a case-by-case analysis.(开头很棒)
In the first, some subjects, to a large extent, faculties can get more knowledge and experience, which contribute to teaching, in real work outside the academic world. In many subjects, such as civil engineering, mechanics, economy and etc. people usually can learn more in profession than in school in that these subjects are tightly relevant to practice in real world. Consider a student major in civil engineering for example. When taught structure, how could he memorize the steps of building a house? Will the narration in textbooks helps him digest all specific steps and even detailed data? Maybe not. But the result will be totally different when he is led to a building site and works with the builders for a whole process.faculty是教员 即老师实践后对起指导教学有没有帮助。 这对结构很好 可惜例子偏了 Consequently, he will clearly know the every step, not easily to be forgotten. In these subjects, the real work experience indeed contribute a lot to the quality of instruction.
On the other hand, with these subject which are advanced mainly by theory research, real work experience has little to do. Quite a lot of subjects progress due to theoretical research to a large extent, such as theoretical (这里重复了)physics, philosophy and humanity, which are less likely relevant to practice outside. Many great theories are born in labs rather than in workshops. On need look no further than some great scientists, like Newton, Einstein, Steven Hawking and their . Imagine that Einstein went to work in workshop all day, 语气很好 可是这样例子没展开啊;不具体, 没说到其特征 will his outstanding Theory of Relativity come into reality? Of course not. From that, we can see that working in relevant professions outside the academic world can do little, if ever, with the improvement of instruction quality.
Actually, there are many more other methods by which faculty can improve their teaching in view of different subject. Real working time and theoretical study all serve of great effectiveness in certain areas. With the advances of these two, some other teaching methods should not be ignored, which can also provide a significant result, such as academic debate, independent research, interdisciplinarity etc. Let us look into the interdisciplinarity, which is highly viewed in college instruction. Since that many subjects are relevant to each other, bringing the ideal from some other fields may achieve an amazing result, especially in arts. I.M.Pei a well known architect, expresses that more often than not, his inspirations are born in classic music, which apparently seems no direct relation with architecture. We can see that the ways to improve instruction are by no means one and only. The most suitable and feasible is the one which provide significant improvenments(这个会不会有些偏了呢?讨论实践对教学工作的影响--你这里的它因太发散了~~)
In sum, while working experience outside the academic world play a important part in teaching to some subjects, it is not working so significantly in some others. Far besides working outside the academic world, many other good methods should not be overlooked. We should adopt specific teaching plan suitable for each specific subject in view of its own feature to improve the quality of instruction. |

“何必为衣裳忧虑呢?
你想野地里的百合花,怎么长起来;它也不劳苦,也不纺线;
然而我告诉你们,就是所罗门极荣华的时候,他所穿戴的,还不如这花一朵呢!”
