TOPIC: ISSUE99 - "In any realm of life-whether academic, social, business, or political-the only way to succeed is to take a practical, rather than an idealistic, point of view. Pragmatic behavior guarantees survival, whereas idealistic views tend to be superceded by simpler, more immediate options."

It is true that pragmatic behavior guarantees the survival in many cases of vast areas. For a scienctist, the practical simple ideas can be easier to transform into products to serve people; For a politician, the pragmatic behavior makes sure he can successfully deal with many social cases; And for a businessman, the practical, simple and immediate ideas makes him survival in his critical market. However, the idealistic point of view may still have its significant value if you consider the long terms and ultimate goals or effects. In that case, I support the point that whether the practical or the idealstical idea is important depends on the condition and the purpose you suppose.
Firstly, it is true that pragmatic behavior has its obvious advantages. The solution can be simpler and more immediate to solve the problem or to make a decision. Considering those practical scientists, engineer, and businessman, the effect is nearly the most advanced fact they considered. If the idea is not practical and effective, they may be lost their place in their fields. In the constrast with the practical one, the idealistical one may needs they to spend more times or money. Hence, choose the pratical idea means survival.
But for the rest part of circumstance, it requires more matural and long term consideration. The practical point of view may be superficial and useless, while the idealistic one gives the deep and vaulable advices. Take algebra for example, the ancient idealistic scientists makes their interests in the abstract world rather than the practical direct view of the world. Some of the tehories they prosposd greatly promote the development of the world laterly. Without these idealistic thinking people and points, we may still in the simple but pratical number worlds, and live in the cave. That is to say, some idealistic point may have its own significant vista considering the long term and ultimate goals and some unexpected effects.
Therefore, it is really difficult to ensure the practical idea will be the only choice leading to success. The practical point of view will sometimes satisfy people who want to meet their needs immediately. But for those cases, which need long term, matural or even ultimate goals, the idealist point of view may be helpful. |
