When it comes to the world’s lesser-known language, the vast majority of people have begun to realize that it becomes worse than ever before. The phenomenon of the language extinction exists everywhere. It ranges from Asia to Africa, Europe and other islands, not only from the poor area, but also from those rich countries all over the world.

Could we save languages as we rescue old temples or endangered animals?
UNESCO publicly announced that 2511 of 7000 languages all over the world are in danger and probably disappear, which surpasses one in third of the total number. According to statistics, 3% of the world population speaks 96% of the world languages, some of which only can be spoken by less than 1000 people. For example, in China, 73 languages become extinct as well as 8 languages lose the ability of communication. As far as I am concerned, we should treat them like other non-renewable resources.

Languages are carriers of human civilization, which is diverse the same as biosphere. There is no doubt that in an ecosystem, the higher the biodiversity, the more abundant species, the system more stable; the contrary the system becomes more fragile and more prone to catastrophic changes. The diversity of language, civilization and biological species are all treasures of human-being. The language diversity could promote the prosperity of human civilization. It is the same today that it always was, and it will never change. Language is the precondition of culture development. For instance, when human civilization emerges, language is very first to be used for communication.

Similarly, the disappearance of a language could result in the death of a culture, an irreversible loss for human civilization. Language, which conveys emotion through artistic works, like story, allegory, mythology, riddle and so on, plays a vital role in civilization. For example, if the oroqen language, which are spoken by few people in China, disappears some day. Human-beings or even some experts could not well interpret oroqen history through the books, paintings or even some material oroqen used. Accumulation of their knowledge and experience were all kept in their language, which were passed down from one generation to another and spread beyond time and space.

In conclusion, language, as a carrier, contains not only simple phenomenon of civilization, but also the totality of human history and knowledge. So important are languages that we can’t afford to lose them. Nothing can compensate the loss of languages. Therefore, for those endangered languages, not only the government but we should use our own strength to protect and rescue them.
