17.The following appeared in a letter to the editor of the Walnut Grove town newspaper.

"Walnut Grove's town council has advocated switching from EZ Disposal (which has had the contract for trash collection services in Walnut Grove for the past ten years) to ABC Waste, because EZ recently raised its monthly fee from $2,000 to $2,500 a month, whereas ABC's fee is still $2,000. But the town council is mistaken; we should continue using EZ. EZ collects trash twice a week, while ABC collects only once. Moreover, EZ-which, like ABC, currently has a fleet of 20 trucks-has ordered additional trucks. Finally, EZ provides exceptional service: 80 percent of respondents to last year's town survey agreed that they were 'satisfied' with EZ's performance."


The author of this letter list three reasons above to certify that the town council should remain using EZ Disposal instead of changing to ABC Waste, but several flaws can be found in the letter after well considering.

First of all, it can not say that EZ is better than ABC because of the times they collect trash. EZ collects twice a week, may be it is because EZ can not collect all the trash once, they need to collect twice while ABC can finish in one time. Even EZ collects twice a week but still leaves some garbage is possible.

In addition, more trucks do not mean better service. Why did ABC order additional trucks? Is it because its old trucks have problems that need to be change, or old trucks are too small to collect all the garbage, or it need to serve another town? How many trucks will EZ send to serve Walnut Grove ? Maybe EZ just use ten trucks while ABC use twenty trucks for this town.

Furthermore, the survey cited above is not convincing. Who conducted the survey? Is it the EZ Disposal company? How many citizens of Walnut Grove did they survey? Who did they ask? Did these people use EZ's service? How long did they use it? Until these questions are answered, it is worthy to take the survey to be a reference.

Even granted that the survey is true, it can not prove that ABC Waste is bad. On the contrary, ABC may be better than EZ in other aspects.  At least we can know that ABC's fee is less than EZ's.

In sum, the letter is lack of evidence which can prove EZ Disposal is better than ABC Waste.
