TOPIC: ISSUE51 - "Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."

Education is a process to lead people better aware of the world and of his own through the accumulation of knowledge, the formation of value system and the nurture of distinctive character. However, education is by no means the only way or with itself alone to serve for the purpose of getting human-being illuminated on their way of evolution.

We have to admit that the ideal of education catering for each individual's perspective needs and interests is appealing. Ever since industry evolution, products are made in mass to meet the needs of thousands of hundreds of ordinary people. They are cheap and easy for production and bear the function to serve for more common needs. However, when most people have enjoyed the convenience brought about by mass production, some of them began to desire more than uniform goods, and thus comes the surge of customization. And ever since, customization has made itself the new mode of the time, which characterized by its uniqueness that differentiated itself from anything else and its rareness of being owned by only small portion of people who can afford the cost for being special. The idea of luxury, which is the pronoun of best, is companied by customization throughout the time. Therefore, it is not hard to understand why the claim of education dedicated to individual needs and interests comes in such a charming way to our minds at very first sight.

However, we should acknowledge it a utopia that will never live to its prospect in the real world. For one thing, a full knowledge of what one needs and interests is itself a long-time obsession for human-being. The original ideal of designing education dedicated to one's distinguished needs and interests will find it stranded in the dilemma that it is hard to outline the definition of what it is supposed to be in the first place. It is through education and other exploration that human gather little by little about themselves. To design such an exclusive education with no understand of one himself is just like to draw a picture even before the outline is clear. For another thing, it overlooks the cost it takes to carry out such a dedicated education. Even if we can cater to each student especially according to his needs and interests, the expense for this would be tremendous since everything is exclusively prepared for each individual respectively. For all the efforts we make for it, does it mean truly effective? I can see no certain promise but a glorious illusion.

On one hand, education is never the only way through which people get well-developed effectively. Take Shakespeare for instance; never in his life did he even get a chance to be educated for writing. However, the masterpiece left behind by him is outstanding and remarkable in the history of literature throughout the world all the time. Were education the only path through which a man can get learned effectively, won't the existence of Shakespeare outshining most well-educated writers of the time be an excellent satire?

On the other hand, education alone with no other exploration towards the universe or inner self will make people dull and limited, being locked in the existing range without outlet of mental freedom. Edison was well-educated, but without the hundreds of failed experiments would there be any chance that it was him who finally invent light bulb? Columbus was well-educated with navigation, yet without the personal exploration in the sea would it be possible for his to discover the new land? Taken a look at all the famous figures in the history who contribute to the progress of human, no one of them would achieve so much by mere education. In another word, there are plenty of people get the same education as they do but do not distinguished themselves from the great many. As the education itself is not effective enough for human development, let alone dedicated education being truly effective.

To sum up, the idea that education designed for individual needs and interests is in splendid apparel, but besides its delusive appearance there's no guarantee for its effectiveness. With and without education, people still needs other efforts to attain glories, which is demonstrated time and again in human history.
