Art has many incarnations: drama, music, painting and sculpture, film, such literary expressions as poetry and the novel, the dance, and, in some ways, architecture. Art’s primary function is providing entertainment, but art has functions more than that.

Another function is that art leads us into a world of what is eternal and universal, which, traditionally, been called the theory of imitation. For Christians, a Renaissance painting of a Madonna and child is somehow a revelation of surpassing spirituality. A Beethoven symphony is the last word on human endurance. Certain arrangement of color and movement satisfy us for a long time. We judge them as beautiful. Beauty, many may insist, is the very hallmark of what is true ‘art’. These may add a third function of art that is instruction. The Character Shylock in Shakespeare’s novel told us what is inordinate; novel Gone with wind teaches us what wars can undermine. All the narrative art in fact instruct us to some extent: when we watch a moral novel, we see ourselves in the characters, we identify our own destines in the plot and we find the representative of problems in all human relationship. So far, we defined the function of art as enjoyment, beauty and instruction, thus the art gives society something of permanent value.

Then, what is the function of critics? By carefully delineates art, criticism serves a function by propagating the best ideas so that they trickle down to the masses. Some art like impressionist paintings is too abstract and abstruse to understand by the masses. Critics pick up the best artwork and satirize the distorted ones. Without critics, Van Gogh’s paintings would vanish because when he was alive, no one recognize his greatest and buy his painting. After critic imparts his greatness to the common man, Van Gogh’s paintings become above price. For example, Picasso's later pictures are so abstract that few of us can understand it without the guidance of the critic. And we are lucky that so many critics form various, ample, and all-sided interpretations that nearly each of us can understand the Picasso's art objective. For another example, artists who set appear on the Oprah Winfrey Show are likely to rise to international fame quickly. We can also see this concept in this example that in recent times when lackluster movie and music periods have been kickstarted by exciting new talent brought to the attention of the masses by critical success. Great criticism springs out of an epoch of great ideas and these epochs are prospered when the great idea reach the masses.

However, critic may mislead people for art. Some critics, without a high sense of responsibility and good professional conduct, pursue personal interests and interestedly recognize greatness in writing. This cheating will never last long. One the other hand, it has been said that the great art is tend to before its times. Take Van Gogh, for example, wasn’t recognized by critic in his age.

All in all, criticism is a great system that it gives feedback to artists and inspires them. Through the analysis above, we can draw a conclusion that critic is just a byproduct of great art. Without art, the critic will never exist. It is art that create something of lasting value. Critic helps society recognize the great art.

Through the above analysis of the function of critic, we can conclude that critic just an attachment to art and they seldom create us something of lasting value.

Roger generalized the distinguishing features of Van Gogh's work, providing people with more concise way to work out the truth of those arts. Art is the soul of our society. They give the deepest insights on human emotion and instincts and are of course having high values. At the same time, no one deserves to neglect the importance of the critics who present the works of artists to the common people in more direct ways. The works of artists have lasting value inside, but they must be evaluated by the critics to benefit the society. In this essay I would like to explore this in detail.

It is generally accepted that the artists produce invaluable works which are essential properties of our societies, whether spiritual or material. Paintings and sculptures are always considered as spiritual assets. Famous wrought pieces of paintings in the history, like The Last Supper and Mona Lisa by Da Vinci, the impressionism works of Van Gogh, had influenced one generation after another. They make people contemplate on their own behaviors and minds, and contribute to the society distinct forms of culture which are ever-lasting. Also, films and music question the human nature from other aspects, which result in more tangible impacts on common citizens because the audio and video effect could touch deeper to the hearts of us. Distinguished works of film are countless: the “Schindeler's List” revealed the bitter history of Jews in World War I, while the trilogy of “God Father” explores the relationship between responsibility and loyalty.

However, it is the critics that bring out the significance of masterpieces and deliver it to the public. Many paintings are too abstract for common people to understand, without critics they would be have been well forgotten or thrown into garbage cans. Consider the famous artist Jackson Pollock of America, who signifies Abstract Expressionism as an example. He created the novel form of painting - action painting which was subjected to numerous controversies since the beginning. Some thought his works were merely chaos, while others saw unusual patterns and beauty in them. Long after he died in the mid-50s, he became a symbol of American modern painting for more and more people came to realize that his painting style is actually invaluable. This is attributed to the critics -- who were professional and paid large amount of effort to comment Pollock's works. The public came to recognize that the essence of his works lies in the passionate expression of unconsciousness and freedom from the bottom of the heart. They benefited a lot from critics' debates and revelations that improved the esthetic standard of the whole society.

In the mean time, critics serve to distinguish good artistries from bad ones, and impel artists yield better works. Whether a piece of work has value or not is ultimately depended on the public through channels of exhibition or auction. Eventually any good artistry must fit to the favor of the public, and the job of critics is to filter the art works ---- common people simply do not have the interest and the knowledge about art principles to do this. On the other hand, the function of critics lies not only in the filtering; they also provide feedback of the people to the artists. Obviously, critics are readers, watchers, and listeners at the same time; they judge the value those works from a distinct perspective to that of the artists, that is -- the standpoint of a citizen. Often it is their harsh criticism that urges the artist to produce meaningful works, such as what has happened to some famous movie directors in China who do everything they could to make profit while being irrespective of the amount of real artistry in their films.

To conclude, the artist and critics exists on each other. Neither one of them is dispensable to present something that has permanent value to the society.

Art is the product of creative human activities in which materials are shaped to convey an idea, emotion or other things reflecting the value of society. With the advance of arts, there is a close relationship between artists and critics begining to function, where the critics help artists give society something of lasting value.

The enduring value of a society must be created by the artists. A society embodies its value from a lot of aspects, such as the economic growth, the level of the civilization, scientific knowledge and so forth. However, in my humble opinion, the lasting value could always be hided in the masterpieces from the artists' adroit hands. Consider, for instance, while the world's real estates and stocks are getting up and down with the screams of people, only the artwork's value have been increasing in the fall of auctions' hammers. Material treasure will definitely vanish in the wind of time, but the most significant spirit of a society deposit in the delicate artwork. Knowledge and scientific technologies remains the valueless treasure of societies as well, and, to some degree, scientists and scholars are also artists because they treat their theories and scientific inventions as the handicraft articles. The lasting value of society is realized by the artists.

However, we shouldn't forget the critics, who had done a great contribution towards the development of artists' work, and there is always being a close relationship between artists and critics. The normal operation of art markets cannot do without art critics. Most artists treasure critics' words, as they invite critics to evaluate their works and give some constructive advice. The hard work of critics not only reduce the gap between artists and people, who always have difficulty to understand what artists want to explain, but make the best effect of the development of art market as well. On the other hand, artists need critics. When an artist wants to spread his work to the whole society (give an exhibition or publish a book of his own), he or she will be in an urgent need of a critic who knows the artist very well and can tell the artist by which way to show would the multitude accept the artist to the largest degree.

What critics had done is unestimated, but sometimes they also make it worse. Because of the great income, being a critic has become a good job for people. As a result of that, some incompetent critics blur the boundary between good and bad, braging about the value of the worthless work from the artists whose work is of a low level or even most unsightly. Anyway, critics have been an important role in the art market.

Actually, some artists consider critics trivial because art work has its own value, as mentioned in the first paragraph, not needing fulfilling through the critics' words.
Before the death of Van Gogh, the number of the paintings which he had sold was only one. Even at that time in which no one realizes the value of Van Gogh's paintings, we cannot accurately say that there is no value in the painting. What worth taking notice is that the value was buried in the epoch and the society itself. Van Gogh is miserable because without the help of critics and healthy surroundings in the art market, his paintings didn't gain the deserved honor until he passed away. In essence, the lasting value belonging to the society must be created by artists, but how people and society look for and make the use of the value are supposed to be instructed by experienced critics.

In summary, critics act like the assistants, helping artists complete the lasting value within the masterpieces and communicate with other people.

The speaker asserts that artist has more contribution to give society something of lasting value than the critic. While, I fundamentally disagree with this assertion for it in some sense neglect  neglect the value of the critics towards the artistic works while, overstate the role of the artists in the creation of a long lasting works. Close scrutiny shows that one priceless works needs the association of the artist and critics.
No one can deny the crucial role of the artists in the creation of the artistic works. For one thing, as it so often pointed out, most of the world famous artist works had been achieved through a long time efforts and all-consuming works of the artistic. This circumstance has especially apparent in the medieval when numerous artistic works have been engaged without any consideration of the contemporary people and seldom can bring the least wealthy to the creators. While, it is the hard efforts of the artist that eventually make the people and critics possible to appreciate and evaluate these works no matter how the contemporary person look at these works.
Ostensibly, it is the artists that ultimately created and introduced these works and also make it possible to have a “long lasting” effect in the human evolutions. While, without the pursuit of the critics these works also hardly recognized by the common persons let along to have an impressive most of the people's mind.
Firstly, the comments of the critics provide the people with the opportunity to focus the attention on the further meaning of the artistic works. For most of the earnest artists the further meaning for one artistic works is much more important the superficial appearance of it.
