It seems that the speaker is on the correct philosophical side of this issue that it is artist not the critic who gives society something of lasting value. I agree with the author insofar as that the greatest artists create splendid works which contribute much to a society. An artist comes up with an artwork through his feeling and thinking of the whole life and the whole society. They create a valuable work of social by superb technique and the special idea. It is these works that bring us abundant social values which let people enjoy the beauty and cleanse the soul in a blundering society.

However, after carefully examining the statement which seems to be somewhat appealing at the first glance, I would like to say that I have enough reasons to present an opposite claim against the author. On the surface artist is the only exclusive to give something of lasting value. But critic finds the value. Critics have an acuminous discernment and can filter what is real deep-dyed thus reduces people's time and energy. With critics' criticism, people can comprehend the value of artwork better. After All, art is extraordinary abstract that is difficult and impractical for normal person to understand totally. Critics have a wealth of knowledge and great thinking so they are easier than ordinary to discover the essence of art at least more easy to tell people what do those artworks truly express. For instance, Don Quixote was recognized to be a funny fiction at first.

Secondly, critics offer a valuable feedback about the artworks thus makes artist keep advances and create better works. A constructive criticism could help artists promote their wording level and tell people how to be a good connoisseur. Artworks are not like the government policy or other things which can feedback from the benefits of the society. So it lacks of a standard measure of self-scale while the criticism of critics happens to make up this deficiency. Artist can improve him or herself through the praise or criticize arguments, and further to create artwork which can be better reflected in social value.

Of cause we have to admit that sometimes critics just play a negative role of function such as prevent art's progressing while the art may need innovation changes or be taken advantages by the government. For example, Mark Twain attacked the political corruption on his novels so the potentate used critics to refute his work; Voltaire objected Shakespeare's works because he didn't conform neo-classical principles.

To sum up, all of the greatest feats in history, which gave society something of lasting value, are those created by artists and evaluated by critics. Appropriate critical evaluation might entice the people's attention towards those works. It is unwise to say that only artist gives society something of lasting value. Critics do plays a significant part in this process. Without critics artworks may not progress fast----and I would be hard-pressed to imagine a worthier end.

. However , the view I hold personally ,either ,is that critic ’s importance on this kind of value is not to ignore.As far as I am concerned ,it is the artist, as well as the critic, who gives society something of lasting value.

Considering novel , fairy tale, notes and something like this ,which is easier for common people to understand

Things with lasting value to society are those with great benefits to both the development of social construction and personal ideology. In order to create such meaningful things, artists are in the front, using their pens, vedios, cameras or instructions to produce art, which might enjoy great popularity and sustaining effects later. Vincent Van Gogh, a 19th-century marvelous painter, is famous for his vivid paintings. His works such as The Potato Eaters, Starry Night and Irises had a powerful influence on the development of modern painting, which leaving wonderful visual enjoyment to the offspring. The color he painted is imaginable and abundant, thus making his painting style unique. Nowadays, almost everyone knows about him and his paintings have already been considered as masterpieces.

However, personal impression on artists' works alone can not fully meet people's instinct need of understanding those masterpieces, so people always turn to critics who command a large amount of art knowledge for help. With professional knowledge, critics can outline the characteristics of the artists and his/her works.
For example, Roger Fry, as a critic, became an advocate of recent developments in French painting, to which he gave the name "Post-Impressionism", including the works created by Van Gogh. Roger generalized the distinguishing features of Van Gogh's work, providing people with more concise way to work out the truth of those arts. Therefore, it is critics who narrows the gap between artists and normal people, and spread the masterpieces to more people all over the world.

Moreover, critics can also help artists to better create works by telling them what should be developed in his creation. Since critics have a command of professional knowledge, it is natural for them to have enough foresight which enables them to judge whether a work of art is wonderful or senseless. In other words, critics' judgment and suggestion to artists can save their creating process and also point out the key of being masterpieces.
