TOPIC:ISSUE203 - "The best way to understand the character of a society is toexamine the character of the men and women that the society chooses as itsheroes or its heroines."
Society is the main product of the humanbeings’ cultural and productivity’s development, integrating of the people’sliving habits, morality, education system and so on. And of course, thecharacters of the heroes and heroines to some extent reflect the judgingstandard of the society, but it is just only a tiny aspect of the society. Itis better to understand the society based on the observations of the educationsystem, economic structure, the attitudes on the heroes and so forth.
The characters of the heroes and heroinesof a society reflect its desires and the advancing directions, changing withthe country’s evolving. When the common people devoted to and tried to solve theproblems existing for long time, harming the life of the public, they becomethe heroes or heroines of the society.
This painful and long existing hardness isthe barrier on the forwarding road of the country, and the public desire a herobrave, intellective, and not dare to sacrifice, to lead them to conquerbarriers and fight for a new life of themselves and the country. For instances,in the last century of the India, suffering with the controlled by the English, the Gandi which is horned and regarded as the father of the India by everyHindu now, delighted the public with his insights and leaded a activity called nonviolence and noncooperation to fight with the English, finally liberated theIndia. The characters of the Gandi reflect the desire of Indian’s society to freedom. So as Martin, reflect expectation of equality among public in that time of theAmerican society.
In some cases, characters of the heroes andheroines disguise the real society. The merits of heroes and heroines arealmost exaggerated by the media in most situations, for political and propagandizingintuitions. Like the example the first chairman of China Mao Zedong and theleader of the Soviet Union Stalin, which is descripted to be the prefect man, will never make mistakes by the media. This kind of the hero, their characters presentedpublicly is only the tool to boost the power of the controlling society, haveno influence on reflecting the society’s characters.
On the other hand, some kinds of heroes give society an idealized impressionwhich are too hard to be imitated by public and affect the essence of thesociety. Joan of Arc led the army French army to several important victoriesduring the Hundred Year’s War, finally captured the enemy than burned at thestake. No one can deny that Joan of Arc is the heroin on the France, but upon thedeeper inspection, she is too brave for the every levels of the French societyto imitate. Accordingly, her manners only can be re-presented by a tiny proportionof the people, is poor to present and comprehend the society.
Based on the hidden structure of thesociety, the society characters can be analyzed from the economic, democracysystem, education, the public opinions on heroes and heroines and so on.Economic is the basis of a society, to some extent, decide the life manner and axiologyof the society, which the people make for living, which level of the society’sproductivity, which level of the people’s living. These facts describe the mainmaterial character of the society. And the attitudes on the hero and educationsystem reflect the spiritual characters of the society can give the observer a deeperinsight of the society.
To sum up, society’s characters can notonly be concluded by observing the characters of the heroes and heroines, dueto its complex, covered, and time-evolving. The different part of societyshould need corresponding observation, analysis and summarization, finally makea conclusion of the characters of the society to get the deeper insights of it. |
