------题目------
The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.
'For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses.'
------正文------
Though the author seems to follow a logical path in reasoning as well as provide relevant evidence, the argument is still unsound. There may be other alternative explanations of the superior performance of domestic cheeses at the newest store. Also the author fails to bear in mind other alternatives that may affect the reliability of the magazine survey.
First of all, superior performance of domestic cheeses at the newest store may be insufficient to bear a general conclusion for all stores. There may be other factors that really matter. Perhaps the newest store holds a big sale of domestic cheeses from Wisconsin that people buy them simply due to the lower price. And in fact, they prefer imported cheeses if it is not for the big sale. Also, perhaps accidentally citizens in the neighborhood of the newest store are fond of the flavor of the domestic cheeses, while for other people in the rest part of the nation, imported cheeses are more delicious. These alternatives may also include the economic condition of the neighborhood of the newest store. It is possible that the domestic cheeses are cheaper than imported ones in average and coincidentally the neighborhood is facing a declination in economic that citizens choose domestic ones to save money despite other factors as flavor and nutrition.
Furthermore, the survey is not as credible as the author assumes. What do the magazine's subscribers consist of? If the subscribers mainly consist of domestic cheese producers and merchants, it is no surprise that they choose domestic cheeses over foreign ones. Again, how many subscribers respond to the survey? A total of 20 people are far from enough for us to draw out a general conclusion. Also, the samples' age, gender, race, work, health condition, lifestyle and the region from which they come should be taken into account. If the samples have much in common that the result of the survey may be limited in some traits that they share and cannot represent the favor of the whole population.
At last, granted all the assumption that the author presumptuously claims, the suggestion is still open to doubt. In the first place, to earn a profit means that our income must surpass the expense. What if the domestic cheeses are too expensive and can barely bring us much income and the reserving of them is harder than imported ones? And what if local cheeses are more likely to perish than imported ones? Then it will not be a good idea for us to mainly store domestic cheeses. Moreover, the operation and administration both can affect profit considerably thus we may find other better ways to raise profit other than mainly based on reserving local cheeses.
To sum up, the author should conduct careful investigation respecting why domestic cheeses perform so well in the newest shop. Moreover, we may require unfailing evidence to ensure the veracity of the survey. At last, the author should keep in mind that there may be other better ways to raise profit.
