Governments must ensure that their major cities receive the financial support they need in order to thrive, because it is primarily in cities that a nation's cultural traditions are preserved and generated.

In my opinion, I fundamentally agree with the author that government should ensure their major cities thrive, however I quite disagree with what speaker’s assertion when it comes to cultural traditions preservation.

Admittedly, major cities represent a nation and usually, are the judgment of a nation in various respects, such as economy, quality of living levels, education, technology, etc. Taking Shanghai for example, is the economic center of China. Thus the government finances the city’s fundamental construction, such as subway construction. Yet, when the major cities have walled up the right path in development, they can thrive by themselves. Now, more and more multinational corporations invest and establish their branch companies in Shanghai, such as GE, IBM. And what the city needs only the government’s policies to ensure stability. Thus government should  also pay attention to other cities and rural places, because majority of the population live in there, and government cannot ensure major cities thrive at the cost of the other region depress, since it is the real progress that the average living levels are lifted.

“Cultural traditions”, according to me, concludes folk arts, thoughts, customs which handed down from generation to generation. Then can ensuring big cities prosperous necessarily preserve and generate a nation’s cultural traditions? I concede that some types of a nation’s cultural traditions need government’s support, especially folk arts. Indeed, some major cities have long histories and therefore are abundant of culture traditions. For example, Beijing has a history of thousand years. Beijing opera, Chinese traditional opera, regarded as the treasure of China’s traditional art, would exist hard, even distinct, if it were not for the support from the government.

However, other kinds of cultural traditions-folk arts, festival, ceremonies are better preserved in remote countries. Many age-old customs are passed down unchanged. For example, in my hometown, a small town in the east of China, families will sacrifice certain food to their ancestor in mid-July of lunar calendar every year, in honors of relevant passed away, and praying that families will be blessed. Once a family has a baby, they would offer “red eggs” to their neighbors, etc. On the contrarily, in the extent of globalization, major cities become modern cities and are more open to the world, therefore many foreign cultures are introduced into traditional cultural, generating a mixture. Take wedding for example: brides prefer to be dressed in white wedding dresses as western styles，while they celebrate in traditional patterns. Moreover, many young people in major cities regard Valentine's Day as a good chance to express their love by sending roses and chocolate. But, little of them celebrate the Chinese Valentine’s Day, July 7 of lunar calendar.

What’s more, it isn’t the major responsibility of the government, and there are more other urgent problems to deal with, such as poverty, job-placement, education and so on. Actually, in the world, many private organizations fund the preservation of cultural tradition.

In sum, when government concern with the development of major cities, they should also pay attention to small cities, because they also play significant roles in preserving a nation’s cultural traditions.
