The most effective way to communicate an idea or value to large groups of people is through the use of images, not language.
------正文------
I agree with the speaker's assertion that in order to communicate an idea or value to others, use of images is superior to that of language, for the reason that image can depict the meanings much more accurate and lively rather than by ways of language. However, in some cases, language has its advantage to express an idea or value.
In the first place, it is much easier and more effective to communicate an idea or value to people by means of images, which is accurate and vivid to express ideas deep. As a student, it is sure that we have some experiences involving study. When faced with something abstract, or uneasy to express by words, we will appeal to the means of images. For example, teachers educate us the idea science is of great power. They will show some images about astronauts discover secret universe, and with help of electron microscope, human has observed little size particles such as molecule, atom, electron, and so forth. If not through images, such conceptions are too abstruse to understand. In short, when it comes to such abstract conceptions and values, the most effective ways, maybe the only way to communicate those to large groups of people is through use of images.
In the second place, when to express a idea or value to many people involving different education levels and social backgrounds, it is arduous to deal with. People with different perception levels, social backgrounds, and living experiences understand the same idea in dissimilar way. To the idea that we should protect our environment, a farmer with little education perhaps does not care it anymore for the reason that he thinks of it of no relation with his interest. On the contrary, a engineer with high education working in a major city may become very worry about this pressing social problem because he takes it as the duty of everyone in the earth. Thus, to communicate a value to a large quantity of people which have different backgrounds, it is difficult to address by use of language.
Admittedly, when it comes to something emotional, the best way to deliver his ideas to others is through the use of language. Common sense tells me that words have a magical power. They can bring either the greatest happiness or deepest despair and words are also capable of arousing the strongest emotions and prompting all man's actions. A telling example involving the claim by President Roosevelt after US suffered a swift surprise attack, Pearl Harbor, amply illustrates this point of view. The claim motivated whole citizens' patriotism to protect their nation and peace. This event also became the watershed in the World War II.
To sum up, on the one hand, to communicate abstruse and abstract value, what the most effective way is just by way of images. On the other hand, to express something emotional or inciting people to share the some sense, the best way is through use of language. |
