"Such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science."

The speaker asserts that nonmainstream science, such as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society for the purpose of satisfying human needs, which, to the contrary, are not provided by mainstream science. I agree with the speaker to the extent that non(main)stream gratified us with the temporary satisfaction or false impliments. However, the speaker inaptly overrated the function of non(main)stream areas of inquiry for the reason that it will mislead pubic into an irrational state or even brings about social insecurity and mental turmoil. After all, it is the mainstream science providing us a brighter picture of the universe and a scientific way to solve the quotidian problems.

Admittedly, the nonstream areas of inquiry serve as a part-and-parcel in our history. On one hand, nonstream science could mitigate the despair arising from those tedious researches in mainstream, and give people somewhat mental support. In light of Marxist philosophy, human mind could serve as(前面刚用了serve as,考虑换一个) an impetus for a much further development of knowledge, or other mainstreams. (这里从human mind is impetus突然转到了一个相反的例子，我觉得在for example之前最好加个过渡句，否则这个example给人一种仅仅是证明impetus的错觉)For example, one day, an employee was low spirit for being fired by his or her company. He might feel hopeless about his future, and believe never pluck up again. Yet, a fortune-teller on his way home may lend him or her some encourages through augering a bright future. Then he or she will strive for another goal.

On the other hand, nonmainstream areas of inquiry, as an inspiration, could give rise to our ardent discussion of the actual meanings of those magical facts. Science as taught today is a relatively recent phenomenon, based on a set of ideas which has been effective in explaining the material world up to a point. While, in early days, without advanced technologies and progressive instruments, hardly could human beings carry out precise observation in their research but only imagination. Nonstream, begin(derived from?) with imagination, functions as an initiatory thought for futher developments. Humans give birth to the initial view towards the comic owed to the enlightening of astrology. From thousands of years of detail observation of the stars and careful correlation with events on the earth springs the astonomy(这句的语法感觉好像有问题). Coupled with nonstream, people will get more determination and courage for their life, and even a deeper re(s)arch in mainstream science.

However, to sheer believe in nonmainstream areas may cause us losing our insight and judegement. Superstition, which can lead to a disregard of reason under the false assumption of a divine or paranormal form of control over the universe, is just a fitting example. A gambler might credit a winning streak in poker to a "lucky rabbit's foot" or to sit in a certain chair, rather than to skill or to the law of averages. An airline passenger might believe that it is a medal of St Christopher (traditional patron saint of travellers) that keeps him safe in the air, rather than the fact that airplanes statistically crash very rarely. Moreover, superstition, if prevailing in the whole society, will make society as a whole instable and arouse a turmoil among citizens for they are in the control of certain few people or a throughly ridiculous faith.(感觉是嘎然而止了，应该再往下说一点)

Finally, mainstream science is the crusial and only authentic way for humans to pursue knowlege. As we all know, we humans are always craving to understand the world around us and ourselves. People have been long exploring the unknown for true answers to our questions, and for lasting solutions to our enduring problems. Then there comes the mainstream science to satisfy our insatiable appetite for knowleage and our ever-increasing curiosity for the unknown world. Mainstream sciences are the fundamental bricks to construct our knowledge castle. For example, the goal of education is to help the students assimilate bounteous theories, ideas, concepts, and notions to confront this ever-changing world. Thus, they could take advantage of the early wisdoms to solve their own problems. As a result, it is the mainstream science, but not others, provide us a bright picture in deciphering the unknown in our lives.

To sum up, nonmainstream areas of inquiry could serve as a solace when we are uncertain of our aim and future, just as a placebo to a patient. Apart from this, it could also be a illumination for our mainstream science. However, throughly resigning oneself into it may turn out to be unreasoned. After all, mainstream science is the only and most scientific methods in solving our problems and satisfing our curiosity.
