I would like to tell you I took GRE general test on Aug. ** and scored 23**(verbal:**,analytical:**,quantitative:**). I know the score is good enough for my application to Dept. of Physics, Stanford Univ.

However, what makes me feel a bit nervous is that GRE score of Computer Adaptive Test(CAT or CBT, exactly the kind I took) would not be accepted when it is time for me to apply in the coming year! That is because, you know, since Educational Testing Service(ETS) announced(unfortunately, in this August during my sprint for GRE) to suspend CBT in China due to the consideration on safty of test questions(sees http://www.gre.org/pbtfaq.html), some departments in some universities, e.g., Havard, Cornell, E.E. in UCLA, UIUC, etc., proclaimed CBT would no longer be acceptable for application for academic year of 2003 or later. I wonder if the admission policy of Stanford, especially your department, has already had some changes as to the validity of CBT GRE score for application. Also, could you tell me if the situation will be different when I apply in the next year, which forces me to re-take GRE for the paper-based version?

I have spoken with the colleagues in the physics department about your question. The chairman of the committee said that you should only take the Physics GRE.

You should apply through the official channel. This is required of all students, just that you use your existing general GRE, no need to take additional one. I think that you need TOEFL.

教授是admission committee的vice chairman,他的担保没问题。
这基本上说明最近一年内Physics of Stanford的policy不变：接受CBT。
但有一点保留，不知道他的话是personal还是official的，因为我是被推荐到他那去的。

重要] 关于不接受机考的学校!!!!
我不得不承认我们中国人太聪明了.

但我希望那些聪明的精英们不要在找出一个个的拒绝接受机考的学校. 因为你们的努力已经找出了很多的学校,当然也会有更多.

包括你们使用CRAZYMAIL来把学校横扫一遍.

但是我从自己的角度来考虑,我不建议你们这样做.因为实际上存在这样一种可能: 本来那些学校并没有考虑拒绝机考，但你们一再的努力催促，导致别人开始认真考虑这个问题。打个比方说：大家问的实际上都是一些教学秘书，这些人实际并没有决策权。他们只能请示上级。而多次的请示完全有可能导致这些上级进行认真的考虑，然后得出大家不想见到的结果。

也许老美未必有你们聪明，也许他们并不想那么麻烦，也许一个两个的问答并不一定会引起他们的考虑，这样他们完全有可能一视同仁对待机考和笔考，但你们的几十次，几百次的问。如果是你，想必也要仔细考虑了，就如同你们在报考机考发布的一些烂消息，最后不都解决了，你们在那么多的MAIL，那么多的电话有什么作用吗？

不要以为你的行为只与你一个人有关，它完全可能关系到其他很多人的利益。而你的行为可能侵害到别人的利益，就如同你们疯狂的索要学校资料，实际上有些学校已经说明不给国际学生寄资料了，这就是这些前辈的功劳吧。

我再次建议，不要在做那些无聊的事，同时却以为自己是英雄。那些损人却不利己的事，少些也罢

今天收到upenn biomedical graduate school的信了，（不是email）通知申请者只接受纸笔考的gre，我可没有发什么信去问他，使他自己来的。真是可惜了，那么好的大学，奖学金超优厚。
