TOPIC: ISSUE 184 - "It is a grave mistake to theorize before one has data."
The basic and vital role that data plays in process of establishing theory is, at all levels, undeniable. Necessary data lays a foundation where the upper construction of theory relies. However, extremely stressing on data would impede our ability and bravery to explore a new field, let alone that data is not always accessible and available.
First and foremost, we should?? never stress too much on data in our studying and drawing conclusion, almost in all realms of study. Looking into the long history of research, no theory would exist itself or would be convincing to any extent, without the empirical or experimental data substantiating it. Data acts as a prerequisite for our analyzing, reasoning, deduction for a theory. Examples in this point are so countless that I can not list them all. The Greek philosopher Aristotle, for instance, ever developed a philosophical system in which theory should follow empirical observation--which is, in my view, just the process for data-- and logic. As we know, he is one of the most successful and praised man in natural sciences (math, physics) as well as philosophy and ethics in that old time. Another example is Darwin, who traveled many places to obtain information for his research, and at last made the unprecedented contribution to the world in his theory of evolution.
On the other hand, overrating on data would impede our ability to explore a new field in which there no preceding information or theory. Sometimes, brave prediction or assumption could lend us a great leap in processing?. A suitable case is Planck, who first give the theory of discrete quantum in energy. Although he suffered from many disagreement and opposition, yet it is his assumption at first that open up a brand-new field comparing with the traditional one.
In fact, assuming a theory before data has become a trend along with our ever-increasing scientific and technological advancement, for sometimes we may face the difficulty accessing any data or enough data. Both in the infinite universe and the microscopic realm, we have not or can not explore them thoroughly, for the limitation of out experimental devices or our technical skills. The outer space and the internal nature of the electrons are two typical cases. In this matter, we have to assume a theory beforehand which is often expected to be verified by other theories or evidence through a indirect way. What's more, as for other realms such as business, it often seems too late to theorize and make a decision until you access the data. The marketing situation is always changing in and unexpected way, and executives must draw his own conclusion and take a action even though based on a few or no evidence, since sometimes the timing is most important.
All in all, data is the basic factor in theorizing, whereas too much emphasis would bring about some negative effects. Further, in some cases, we must face the fact that data can not always be accessible for our theory. |
