Nowadays, people emphasize on creative thinking and uniqueness, viewing them most important personalities of genius. People who always bring out novelty ideas and insightful perception are pioneers in their special field. However, compared with the old age, individual is less likely to play a decisive part in almost every field, taken into consideration the highly developing technology and booming information that modern people have to face today. On the contrary, cooperation and team work are the dominating impetus of innovation. Not only more ideas are inspired in teams, but also those ideas come into being from the effort of cooperation in most cases.
Generally speaking, sages in the old times were able to make creative innovation and great discoveries, because the knowledge accumulated in those times was relatively limited to a small range and human beings’ understanding of universe remained on a shallow stage. Thus, it was possible for an individual to master a considerate complete knowledge and did research independently. Such as Aristotle, who not only made great contribution to philosophy, but also established the basis of biology.
However, as time flies, our understanding of the world is accumulating at an incredible speed, especially in the recent 100 years. Consequently, knowledge is increasing to such a great amount that no one is able to be expert in many fields, instead, one can either have a general knowledge in several discipline or specialized in one or two. In addition, the complexity of research in almost every field demands knowledge of lots of other disciplines. Therefore, the possibility that any individual could play a significant part independently becomes less and less. Besides, people who have little communication with others, even they may be creative and original, fail to catch up the rapid development of society and thus are not likely to bring out great innovations.
During the procedure of cooperation, people often get inspirations from each other, which are the basis of innovations, and those novelty ideas are completes gradually through discussion. There is a saying in Britain; the winners of Nobel Prize are created in a small coffee shop. In the early 20th, physicists would like to collect in a small coffee shop near Cambridge to discuss the problems they encountered in their research while having coffee. It is during this casual meeting, great thoughts were created. Although, in every concrete case, the original idea may be put forward by a certain person, the function of team cannot be overshadowed.
In conclusion, to claim that it is always an individual who is the impetus for innovation overestimates the role of individual and neglects the effect that cooperation have on individual. In this informative society, we have to pay more attention to teamwork and the ability to cooperate with others.
