Law, generally defined as a system of rules, serves as a social mediator in relations between people. It could not be simply categorized into two aspects: just and unjust, as the speaker does. Also while obeying just laws is important, we should take a second thought before resisting the unjust ones.
To begin with, it is not wise to classify the law into being just and unjust. Different pepole have different interests towards even the same thing. When some people having positive interests might view the law to be just, others confined by the laws might have the idea that the law is unjust. For example, the slavery law is a good instance, from which white Americans could benefit because they could own a large number of slaves working for them and paid by little. As a result, from their perspective, this law is just! However, when the slaves did not think so, in that it is this law that deprived of their freedom and rights and consequently it is unjust. In short, being just or unjust changes as the interests of people vary. In addition, sometimes people's belief plays a vital role in deciding whether the law is just or unjust. For instance, some people believe that laws allowing euthanasia are just because these laws can make an end to the pain for the patients. In constrast, others strongle disagree with the laws. Therefore, there is no a definite line between just laws and unjust laws as the situation becomes complex for different people.
Laws whether they are just or not, playing an important role in our society should be obeyed. The laws can determine the society norms people have to conform to, maintain a harmony society and lead up to the development of the society. Without laws, people can do whatever they want to, resulting in a chaos. For example, drivers driving at a speed of 300mph would collide with another car in the region's highway, causing a terrible traffic accidents. Another example is considered when the soldiers' duty is to conform to the oder given no matter wheter the oder is true or false. They can only take action without hesitation. Only in this way can the troop possiblely make a triumph when battle is going on. The same is true only when people obey the laws and do not resist the unjust ones can the society be stable.
However, obeying the unjust laws does not mean that citizens do nothing but just obey. In fact, when they find the laws unjust, they could choose suitable ways such as putting forward with suggestions to the legislature to amend the laws rather than disobeying them. Not everything is born perfect. For example, at first, women did not have rights in laws, but now the situation is different: they have rights to elect, to be educated and so forth. The best way is to make neccessary changes when changing is needed, through which the society would have more just laws and decrease the number of unjust laws peacefully.
In sum, justness and unjustness are the two sides of the laws, which are always varying according to the people considered. When it is important to conform to the just laws, it is not wise for the citizens to resist the unjust laws, which would cause harm to some people innocent. Obeying the unjust laws and suggesting the legislature to amend it would be an appropriate manner when confronting unjust laws. |
