Graduate Assistantship (PhD) in Biosystems Engineering
Position: Exciting multidisciplinary and multicampus project involving the development of biodegradable textiles for use as mulches for growing fruits, vegetables, and other crops in "high tunnel" devices (http://www.hightunnels.org/) and perhaps greenhouses. Candidate will be assisting in the preparation and assessing the preformance of the mulches in terms of materials testing, biodegradability versus time under a variety of cultivation conditions. Responsibilities: Requirements for completing a PhD in Biosystems Engineering are described at http://bioengr.ag.utk.edu/gradStudies/grad_BE.asp. Students will complete necessary coursework and perform independent research under the guidance of Drs. D.G. Hayes and L.C. Wadsworth. Requirements: MS (preferred) in Biosystems Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Material Science and Engineering, or related field. Background in materials and/or textile chemistry, and analytical chemistry would be a "plus".
