TOPIC: ISSUE138 - "Only through mistakes can there be discovery or progress."
We can always observe such a scene that a child of one year old or so begins to walk by itself. Unfortunately, once apart from parents' firm hands, immediately it fell onto the ground and begins to cry. Minutes later, however, it once again attempt to walk around as if it has already forget the pain caused by falling down, and once again it falls. How many times of falling and standing up again would a child experience before it finally can walk, or even run on its own. Yet, it is just through this process of trying and making mistakes that our human society progress.
As the famous Chinese saying goes, "Men are not saints, how can they be free from faults", making mistakes is the human nature that we cannot avoid. Actually, to make mistakes is a progress of learning all through our life, from the time an infant is born to his last few days in the world. An infant learns what is dangerous and harmful to it by touching something very hot or some sharp implements by mistake; a young student acquires proper methods to solve mathematic problems by trying hard but failing to work it out at the first time; an adult becomes very successful in his career after innumerate times of failure in doing business and finally gains enough precious experience; and even an old man learns that they should not dote their grandchildren too much when they find it is their indulge that makes them stray away to commit criminals.
Moreover, not only common knowledge and basic skill but also many great discoveries and progresses can be achieved through mistakes. Human history has witnessed the breakthroughs of science discovery and technology progress made through mistakes. Take the light bulb for example, only after more than 2,000 of mistakes in choosing the appropriate material can Edison finally find the right one, thus leading the world into a much brighter one.
As a matter of fact, those initial progresses or discoveries made by our forebears, such as the invention of paper, the discovery of America continent and so forth, all are reached only on the base of a great deal of previous mistakes.
Admittedly, we cannot overemphasize the importance of mistake to the extent that we cannot make any progress without it. We can also make progress by prudent meditation before taking any action thus avoiding many possible mistakes to take place in the real world. Actually we allowed them to happen in our brain instead. Moreover, we shall not abandon ourselves to make mistakes in the sake of making discovery or progress.
For this matter, I think if Edison had had a choice, he would not like to make so many mistakes. In short, we do not choose to make mistakes but we have to sometimes.
In sum, it is our intrinsic nature to make mistakes now and then. We cannot even acquire enough to live an ordinary life without mistakes, let alone make discovery or progress. To make a sense, we should not afraid to make mistakes but we should be cautious to eliminate those silly one. |
