12.8 printed book have had greater effects on society than television has?
Seemingly televisions take the high ground in people’s lives since we watch it for news, entertainments, and scientific programs. However, printed books have several advantages beyond the scope of television, such as variousness of categories and the depth of contents. And they have a larger effect on human’s lives.
Firstly, prints are the main sources for learning, because they have been accumulated for more than one thousand years. So they include all fields of human beings had ever touched. Nowadays students need plenty of studying materials for courses, including ancient literature, internet designing, environmental protection, which needs a lot of stuffs for reading and researching. Even though television gives numerous programs, it can not include all aspects of art and science. For example, when I want to study chaos theory in physics course, I often open a book named Introduction to Chaos instead of turning on television because TV do not provide programs concerning this specific theory. Thus people learn from books, and if they have a chance, they store their knowledge and ideas in them too.
Second, scholars use book to do searches because of the depth of books. For long years, numerous scientists devoted themselves to write books to record theories as well as promulgate them. So the depth of books is surprising. Television programs, on the contrary, are relatively superficial. They just refer to the visual explanation of certain theories but can not give exact description. If one wants to study the interaction between certain galaxies, he or she should look for formula in the physics book written by Einstein, not in Discovery Channel.
On the another hand, television offers people a lot of exciting and inspiring programs, which help them to appreciate ancient arts through National Geography, see the beautiful of universe through AE channel. Nevertheless, all these programs stress on impression. They are capable of employing several 3D animations to illustrate a theory but can never give precise formula. That is to say, they can give image but not concrete proof. So people need printed books.
To sum up, because of the unsurpassable of the advantages of printed books, people use them for learning, propagating knowledge. So printed books have a tremendous effect on society which can not be transcended.
