题目:ARGUMENT38 - The following memo appeared in the newsletter of the West Meria Public Health Council.
"An innovative treatment has come to our attention that promises to significantly reduce absenteeism in our schools and workplaces. A study reports that in nearby East Meria, where fish consumption is very high, people visit the doctor only once or twice per year for the treatment of colds. Clearly, eating a substantial amount of fish can prevent colds. Since colds are the reason most frequently given for absences from school and work, we recommend the daily use of Ichthaid, a nutritional supplement derived from fish oil, as a good way to prevent colds and lower absenteeism."

In the argument, the arguer concludes that it is a good way to prevent colds and lower absenteeism to have lchthaid, a nutritional supplement derived from fresh oil. To support this conclusion, the arguer points out that a study report in nearby East Meria, people have lots of fish and they visit the doctor only once or twice a year for the treatment of cold. He also assumes that colds are the reason most frequently given for absences from school and work. This argument rests on a series of unsubstantiated assumptions, and is not persuasive as it stands.
First of all, the arguer didn't give more information about the survey which the study report was based on. So I have many questions about the reliability of the study report, such as are there enough people to take part in the survey, and is it typical enough to get the report result. Then the study report is about people in nearby East Meria, are there the same situation in Other parts of Meria?
Then the arguer claims that people in East Meria have lots of fish and they visit the doctor once or twice a year for the treatment of cold. He fails to give evidence to show that eating lots of fish is the reason why people seldom have a cold. Maybe there are other factors which influence residents’
health, such as the local weather, eating habits.
Even assuming that having lots of fish can prevent cold, Ichthaid which is a nutritional supplement derived from fresh fish is totally different from fish. No one assures that Ichthaid can produce the same influence on colds, so it is unwarranted to conclude that having Ichthaid can prevent cold.
At last, the arguer claims that colds are the reason most frequently given for absences from school and work. However, he did not make a survey about the claim or show any evidence to support it. Perhaps some people just take having a cold as an excuse for them to be absent. Although it is easier to ask for leave because of physical problems, maybe having Ichthaid can bring about more physical problems.
In summary, the arguer drew the conclusion on the basis of a series of assumptions. The arguer should give more evidence about eating fish is a good to prevent cold. Furthermore, he should survey more about the same effects on colds between fish and Ichthaid. Finally he should assure that Ichthaid can also prevent colds like eating fish does.

The author contends that it is essential for an effective leader to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives. Meanwhile, any leader will accomplish little if the leader is quickly and easily influenced by shifts in popular opinion. I agree with the contention to the extent that an effective leader should commit to particular principles and objectives. However, an effective leader also needs to think about the popular opinions.
First of all, it is essential for a leader to commit to the principles and objectives and this will produce a favorable influence for the leader. Admittedly, principles and objectives are one of the promoting power for a company, a school, an institute, even for a country which ensure the ordinary running of these units. For example, in a business company, principles and objectives are based on the persue of the business profits. Therefore, the leader of this company should follow and commit to these principles and objectives in order to obtain more profits for the company.
Secondly, an effective leader needs to listen to popular opinions. On one hand, listening to popular opinions and getting acknowledged with the popular idea is a good way to achieve respect from public so that the leader can be respectful which will be conducive to his or her working. On the other hand, shifts in popular opinion is essential for a leader to consider these different ideas and combine better views together to enhance his or her leadership. Take the realm of politics for example, many politicians always sail with the winds of the shifts of popular opinions to distribute their political opinions. The wit of treating others' opinions is also another factor which contributes to the success of some leaders.
Third, it is wise for a leader to combine the commitment to particular principles and objectives with the shifts in popular opinion so that the leader can be effective. The leader in a company are a typical example of this. It is important for a company leader to commit to company principles, meanwhile, the leader is required to deal with shifts in popular opinion and react to the opinion quickly and appropriately.
In sum, being an effective leader needs lots of essential qualities. An effective one needs to grasp the art of the leadership, and at the same time, learn to balance the relation between particular principles and shifts in popular opinion. |
