28 "Students should memorize facts only after they have studied the ideas, trends, and concepts that help explain those facts. Students who have learned only facts have learned very little."
i strongly agree with the speaker's firstclaim about the importance of the ideas, trends and concepts in our learningprocedures, primarily because this contention accords with my experience as astudent. however, the speaker unfairly generalized that the conceptual ideasmust comes strictly before memorization, which will definitely impede thelearning process instead of advancing it. as discussed below
with the first claim, i strongly agree that just rote memorize withoutunderstanding the facts, trends and concept of the fact, one can never reachthe learning goal perfectly. Take one of my major course circuit design forinstance, we should first understand to goal of the circuit, the function ofeach component, the concept of the design and the idea of heat and areaoptimization then we can understand the design of the circuit with the help ofcircuit diagram. without the aid of those basic concepts, it is useless tomemorize those diagrams and data books, not to mention understanding the designof the circuit.
with the second claim, i concede that with the postponing of the memorize workand preset the conceptual framework, one can better understand the fact whenmemorizing. however, the importance of conceptual ideas did not give it apriority to memorization in learning process.learning is a procedure throughwitch we can understand the better. we get to know the fact throughmemorization. while to understand the fact, we need to analysis the fact withthe consideration of concepts, ideas as well as the trend. So in my point ofview most of the time good combination of the two will give you betterefficiency. consider again the learning procedure of circuit design asdiscussed above, one can first look at the circuit diagram and data sheet thentry to figure out the the function of the component with the aid of ideas, concepts and develop trends and finally understand the wholecircuit. I'm pretty sure that this approach will be more effective than justsetting the conceptual framework then memorization.
moreover, in some case taking the concept first without factual evidence willimpede the understanding process. the support this, one need to look no furtherthan the PoliticalStudies in soviet union. in political class, teachers will always infuse thestudent with the concept that the political system of soviet union is the bestin the world and lead the students to a wrong direction. based on thishypotheses, students will catch the evidences that support the presume whileignore the contradict evidences and even scorn the people with opposite ideas.without doubt we will be led to a wrong conclusion if we stick to the proceduregiven by the speaker.
To sum up, we should not ignore the importance of theconceptual ideas learning procedure since that students can learning nothing ifthey just try to remember the fact without understanding the concepts. whilewithout the support of fact, concepts just like skeleton without filling. The two don't have priority to each other, and only if we learn the facts alongwith the concepts can we make the most effective learning. |
