Is it a gravemistake to theorize before one has data, as the speaker asserts?Generally speaking, I agree with the speaker's assertion that data isnecessary upon which all theories depend. However, we should alsoconsider the restriction of technology and view, whose development isclosely related to the advancement of theory.
To begin with, datais indispensable for us to theorize, without which we can never fullydevelop our theories to act(可以去了) as a foundation for further exploration inthat field. With numerous data of different traits(貌似这个词只是专指人的特点) of pea generalizedby Mendel, the hiddenlaw of genetics has been theorized. To be specific, the statisticaldata of thousands of peas revealed the regulation of gene distribution (disrtibuted?)to their next generations, which set up the basic foundation upon whichour modern genetic engineering depends. In this case, data does provideus a base to theorize, whose importance is obvious.
However, with therestriction of the theory itself, one can never fully prove it withcomprehensive data. This point can find its appropriate support by theexample of the theorization of Newton No.1 law(这个有专有名词的,还是不要用NO.来表示,这个词很informal), which describes theregulation of movement in some ideal condition- without any force. Eventoday, we cannot afford a space to do the experience to generalize dataof how the subjects move in order to approve the Newton No.1 law. However, this law does become the basis for us to build our furthertheories. In such circumstance, it is impossible to require a fullydeveloped data before we theorize. If so, we will never develop such amature physics theory system to conduct our further researches.
Furthermore, the enrichment of data comes along with the development of equipmentand the development in other fields. Take the example in physics aswell, in the beginning, Newton has established a very mature system forany subjects in the universe to abide by, which is regarded to beclassic. However, with the development of microscope and the discoveryof electron, Einstein has set up another system for these microsubjects to obey. With the increasing interests in researches in(of) themicro field, we develop the "string theory" to improve that ofEinstein, which could also be revised or replaced in the future. Fromwhat we know, it is unwise to wait before all the data is completed. The theory should be generalized with the data that can be collected inthat era, and set up a foundation for later improvement.
In conclusion, datais the foundation of any theories, a fully imagination depended theoryis not reliable for us to believe. However(换换词), with the limitation, sometheories can never be fully proved, and it is also unwise to waitbefore all the data is collected. The best way is to theorize with thecurrent data and expect revision or replacement with new data(ones).
