I fundamentally agree with the author that the formal education is the primary way, that a culture perpetuate the ideas it favors and discredit the ideas it fears.

To begin with, the basic role of the education is to make the culture survive and thrive. In the formal education, schools teach their student to acquire the skills and techniques by which they could support themselves in the fulture. Moreover, to make the new comer get along well with the society, the schools instill the basic values, which is well-accepted by the community, into the new generation, such as honest, reverence, piety to the God or some others. Through which, the formal education constuct a new social number and, at the same time, deliver the core of a culture form generation to generation steadily. From the 2 points above, it is reasonable to view the education as the tool of the culture, in the form of foster their social numbers, to make it survive and thrive.

Secondly, the education could trim the culture, when it was delivered to the students, according to the mainstream by the well-accepted value system. In the process of trimming, those it favor was saved, highlighted and emphasised, while those it fears was discredited. For instance, the patriotism and pugnacity was trumpeted when a sovereignty was threatened by the foreigen state. While in the era of peace, harmonious company was highlighted. A country under a dictator can not forbear the true freedom and democracy appears in their formal education texts.

However, in some extent, other forms of culture carriers, such as family, community, and clan also play a unique role in delivering their own cultures. Though ,the formal education is the main body to deliver the mainstream trends and views. For instance, the family values, such as the faithfulness to the consorts, cherishing the elders, the memorial ceremony for the pasts was well delivered, and teached within the families. Needless to say, those is a part of the mainstream values, but can be best teached by the community education rather than the formal education. In the other hand, in some multicultures, the the minority culture is not belong in the formal education, but it is a part of the culture for sure. Of course, in the aspect of influence, the formal education have the up hand

In sum, the education’s inherent role is to make the culture survive and thrive. In the form of foster the young social mumbers, the culture was delivered form generation to generation. And at the same time, the education was trimmed and rearranged to be fit to the main value system.
